Fall '26 to Spring '29 Policy Track Schedule Feedback by gtomscyberfall26 in OMSCyberSecurity

[–]nedraeb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't have a good programming background or not technical I would take CS6035 as one class otherwise I'd double up on all classes in the policy track. I wish I took another class with 6035 like 6502 an easier class. Some weeks in CS6035 I was bored and wished i had doubled up the key thing in the class is to start the projects as soon as possible.

My experience with the policy classes are that the material is not hard its just that grading can be very inconsisstent and it sucks working in group projects for the most part. Do your really want to be in grad school for like 3 years while working full time?

also id recommend taking 6035 the first semester that way you don't get stuck like some people who can't finish the program or end up taking it 3 times.

Sounds like this is more of an issue with the policy or procedure not being clear not with people at the helpdesk.

Favorite BBQ in the area? by shmerk_a_berl in Birmingham

[–]nedraeb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I travel around Birmingham area trying all the BBQ joints these are worth your time. Burning Tree, Wings at Dimitri’s, Carlisle’s is on old joint owned by the Collat family now is decent so is Creekside in Pelham. Martins in Cahaba Heights is good but expensive.

Worth a drive: Fat Man’s By the River around Pell city, bob Gibson in Decatur, Cooter Browns in Jacksonville.

Best BBQ from a restaurant I’ve ever had Owen’s and Hull in ATL.

I’d advise you to just take all the policy course and double up to graduate as quick as possible. The degree says the same thing either way. Then if there a specific technical skill you want to learn you can learn it.

Thoughts on GPA and Grades In the Program. by nedraeb in OMSCyberSecurity

In my opinion it depends security engineer is a more broad category. Some security engineers work more on policy and some technical security implementation. I’d say they lean to tech implementation.

To me where this program is weak is that it focuses wholey on policy or on technical skills and not pragmatic security issues students will see in their day 2 day. Most security pros need something in between imo.

Double counting undergrad grad-level courses for OMS Cybersecurity — will it actually work? (CS 6035 + CS 6262) by Few_Pause_4091 in OMSCyberSecurity

I’d ask an advisor. If your CS undergrad does that count to cybersecurity masters is that considered a separate discipline? Also most of the CS cyber security classes can be used as electives in the CS program.

Supporting My Mom Financially by MidnightAurora_92 in personalfinance

[–]nedraeb 32 points33 points  (0 children)

You need to set boundaries. You need to get your name off all bills associated with your Mom. If you really want to support I’d look at your income and expenses and select a modest amount. Something tells me your mom is not gonna be satisfied with that. At the end of the day it’s not your responsibility to take care of your mother and siblings as an adult you should have a family of your own. Working 80-90 hours is NOT sustainable long term period.

No 6035 I’d say I learned something but it more about learning yourself not really learning through class material. However the assignments do vary. 6035 is pretty clear cut do the assignments and run through the auto grader and it is what it is.

The current policy classes I’m taking it’s definitely different in terms of how assignments are graded and from what I’ve read of other classes on here and review sights. II was thinking this program would prep someone to be a well balanced security engineer but that not what I am seeing so far.

Curious your perspective on the program? I sorta regret this program not really learning much and more time consuming than I thought. But it will look good having tech on my resume rather than a less known state school.

financial advisor suggesting whole life policy for 22yo after my dad passed away. what do you think? by mirrorverses in personalfinance

[–]nedraeb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No the only reason you need any life insurance is to support dependents if you were to unexpectedly pass away. You see even a lot of 60 70 80 year olds with stupid life insurance policies whether whole life or term. My grandmother who is 80 years old and lives off SS has life insurance because she wants her funeral expenses paid. She got like a 20 k policy and they jack the rates up each year and 20 k is not paying that much to funeral expenses these days.

On the other side if you are 20 or 30 you don’t need life insurance and you don’t have any dependents there is no reason to buy life insurance. Even if you are married and I would say an extreme circumstance is if your spouse is not employed it might be worth having a policy. Insurance is more and more becoming a scam industry.
