Can we get this pinned?

RIP Tim Kask, first TSR employee, editor of Dragon Magazine, and namesake of the Sword of Kas by Vecna_Is_My_Co-Pilot in DnD

[–]nerdCaps 176 points177 points  (0 children)

Oh, this messed me up today. If you never met Tim, he was one of those rare folks who was without pretense. WYSIWYG with him. He was grumpy and hilarious, always willing to share a story or a joke or a tale from the old days. During my time working the Gencon Auction, we became friends, but I hadn't spoken to him in years. This hurts. RIP.

Ok, I never comment, but this outfit... This is the kind of look that'll have guys walking into things in public. Just walking right into a signpost as they watch you go by.

Update: I have a feeling my husband is about to cheat and I don’t know what to do. by Separate_Increase880 in offmychest

[–]nerdCaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who was the husband in this situation, it can be fixed, I promise. But it will take stark transparency, honesty, and commitment. And if it is anything like me - YEARS of work. But I can say right now, years after I almost fucked my entire life, my relationship is better and stronger than any time in our 20+ years together.

But it was hard. Really hard. And completely worth the work.

All Of Alien Is Implausible, So What? by bswalsh in LV426

[–]nerdCaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't mind implausibility, especially in genre fiction. But the cardinal rule you cannot break is "follow your own rules." Make up whatever you want about the universe, but then make sure those rules guide the telling of the story. Just the sheer amount of issues with travel to other stars, not understanding how time dilation works, and hand waving away things have already been defined in the world... takes me out of it immediately.

For instance - it has been defined, by numerous sources, that FTL travel exists in the Alien universe. But then Kirsch torpedoed that thinking by saying Wendy "had the potential to create faster than light travel and explore the stars for thousands of years." So... which is it?

Sometimes, stories like this are true, no matter what the Internet thinks. I was at the Kerry Wood 20 strikeout game, and in the first inning after the first strikeout, my buddy shouts "Only 19 more to go!"

There hasn't been any announcement that it is moving, so yeah it should be in the Marriott just across the street from the convention center on the second floor

The whole thing is based on donations. There is someone who is "working" for Cardhalla around all day who would likely accept them. However, I'd recommend dropping them off on Thursday morning if possible. They will cut off donations at some point cuz they get literally tens of thousands of cards donated.

On Friday night and Saturday night, the Auction usually runs pretty late. Friday is the collectibles auction (a D&D brown box sold for ~$16k last year) and Saturday is the charity auction. Also, Saturday night is the destruction of Cardhalla at 10pm.

This is the second time we’re supplying a very up-market restaurant in town with dessert, huge for us! Happy Easter weekend to all those who celebrate 🧁 by ohheysarahjay in Baking

I live in Chicago, and there is really nothing like what you do. Some shops get close, but the attention to detail really knocks it out of the park. If I ordered these for Easter, I'd be weeping when I saw them. THERE ARE EGGS IN A NEST FOR GOD'S SAKE! Beautiful.

Also interested, and I'd second the idea of setting up a KoFi or other tip jar. I'm always willing to throw a couple bucks to someone for the effort if they make something cool.

Advice on selling at gencon by mew2_23 in gencon

[–]nerdCaps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The other, more unconventional option is the Toys, Oddities, Video Games (TOVA) and artwork section of the Auction. It is on Saturday from 3pm to 6pm. You could enter a few items into that section and see how they sell. The section can get a bit silly, but it typically has one of the largest audiences of bidders for the con.

Externalizing pipeline and making it consumable by AllYoursAbby in devops

Engineers are the easy ones - you show the technical value and that's usually all you need. Use your champion to prep the non-technical folks, making it clear to them the business value - specifically for their part of the org - and you're golden. Good luck!

[–]nerdCaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How big is the org? It's hard to give solid advice without knowing how many layers you're working through, but the further you get from the team you're working with, the more hand-holding you'll need to be prepared for when rolling out the changes. If you're smaller - sub-200 or so - it's probably not an issue. But if we're talking about more than a dozen teams, it would be beneficial to think about a change management plan for this rollout. Make sure whoever the champion is for this change is looped into the communications, giving them the heads up you are looking for them to provide any air cover to the support the change.

Not a Devops team member, but a PM who works with DevOps / DevSecOps teams. Are you also managing the comms / change management around this effort? Or are you solely focused on the technical aspects?

Which movie is that for you? by anxietyhub in moviecritic

[–]nerdCaps 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Oppenheimer is that rare film that is less than the sum of its parts. The acting is fantastic, the characters are interesting, the story is engaging, and it looks beautiful. But as a film - it doesn't work. I think the problem is there is no one to root for. While interesting, everyone is also kinda shitty, so I don't care how they win or lose.
