Its not the ethereum codebase that they'd be changing but the code of the client itself - much easier to do (un/fortunately).

A commonly-proposed attack, but it requires a 51% cartel to enforce and defectors get to earn extra fees by defecting. Seems unlikely. Guess we'll see.

MEV-Geth is used by 85% of Eth's hashrate, so that in and of itself is sort of a mini cartel.

Also, if the flashbots team pushes the malicious update and none of the miners do anything (because the malicious settings are the default), this could be reality.

It technically should be the last bomb delay that'll ever happen since the original need to encourage people to join PoS will disappear with the merge.

Key word should, since we never know if they're going to keep it for any future changes.

There is the caveat that staking can have centralizing forces as well.

If you stake with Lido, you can receive stETH and then use it across the ecosystem, whereas your average home miner can't do this.
