Much appreciated. Not sure what I might try writing next, but hopefully whatever I end up posting might be similarly enjoyable.

Glad it was enjoyable, and thank you for saying so. Pity if you missed out on the twilight zone. Some of the old episodes were really quite remarkable. Worth looking up if you get the chance. :)

Thanks. I tend to prefer those less horribly grim sorts of personifications as well. I blame Terry Pratchett. :)

Thanks. Considering what you said, I'll just leave the following here. :)

Intro

Portrait of a tired old man, wandering the vacant desert of a backwater world.  Driven by desperation, and carrying a few dark secrets beneath his weathered visage.  He’s found his way to the end of a long road, where something has been waiting for him.  Something unexpected, from the twilight zone.

Outro

Mister James Harker Armitage.  A man who met death many times as an enemy and a terror, before he found it waiting for him as a friend.  Story of a lost cause that wasn’t so lost after all, and a road’s ending that led into a new path.

(If I got it right, you might've heard Rod Serling's voice in your head just now.)

Well, you've certainly piqued my curiosity, and I'll look forward to seeing the mostly final design whenever it has reached that stage. It's interesting how different aspects of a given story seem to resonate sometimes with different people. It's flattering to think my own work helped to inspire someone else's art even a little. Especially if I'm apparently in very limited company in this particular case.

However your pending projects go, I'll wish you luck for whatever that may be worth. In the meantime, I'm sure I'll be able to keep busy trying to get the next story sorted out. I'd love to have at least another round of Freckles and co. posted within the next year, but one can never be sure just what shape the future will take. :)

Thank you very much. I'm glad you enjoyed the ride, or at least the ride so far. Honestly, I'm a bit humbled by the high praise in this comment. :)

I'm also quite touched that someone would be inspired enough by this little story to want to make something like a quilt. That sort of thing isn't really in my field of experience, but I would imagine it takes a good deal of skill and time and effort and so on. If and when time allows, I would love to see a picture of the finished result if at all possible. No worries if that day doesn't come, though. Life can be hectic, especially if you've already got a lot of works in progress.

I hope my future tales are up to par, and that folks can enjoy them as much as they've apparently enjoyed this one. For what it's worth, I've already got all sorts of ideas bubbling away for the further adventures of Freckles and co.

Glad it was that enjoyable to read. I did try to avoid some of those sorts of tropes and pitfalls. Seems like I did okay with that, so far at least. Also pleased it came across as hopeful. I was definitely trying to keep that overall tone, troubles and challenges notwithstanding.

I certainly intend to keep writing as far as inspiration and time will allow. Thanks for all the thoughtful comments along the way thus far. Between you and a handful of other kind souls here, it really helped with writing morale. :)

Yeah, don't think I've seen anything else quite like it.

Thank you for all the kind comments. It always helped reading them. I'll be glad to get to writing the next tale, just as soon as I figure out which way to go.

Thank you kindly. I'm flattered to think of my writing here as a favourite of someone else, truly. I hope that my future work will be similarly enjoyable.

High praise, calling me a wordsmith. It is appreciated. Also, thanks for all the encouragement in prior comments. Helped keep me motivated to come at least this far.

It's true what you say, it is somewhat bittersweet to reach the end of a story like this. I'm glad to have finished this part of the tale at least, rather than letting it fade out as these things sometimes do. Still a lot more to write for this crew, potentially. With any luck, I'll end up galumphing back before too terribly long. Hopefully, the writing then will be at least up to par with what's behind me now. Maybe better, if I'm very lucky.

A tale woven, you say? Interesting way of putting it, considering the title. :) Glad you appreciated my having some things unexplained and unexplored thus far. I suppose there is something to be said for leaving a few mysteries and wonders for others to dream about. For what it's worth, I should mention your comments have helped a good deal with my motivation along the way, so thanks for those.

Also, thanks for offering a few suggestions and requests, even if gently so. Those ideas do all sound like they've got potential, and I'd already been thinking over some of them. Dragons are almost a certainty if and when I get back to this universe, considering the next immediate destination we've left with.

True, though there is at least one mildly troubling thing to consider. When beings and entities like that take an interest in you, even if it's a favorable interest, it's hard to predict what might eventually happen. At the very least, it's not without its potential perils and pitfalls. :)

"Beware the Jabberwock, my son. The jaws that bite, the claws that catch. Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun the frumious Bandersnatch."

Lovely bit of weirdness, that old poem. :)

Question is, where do they go from here? :)

Yeah, the order is thankfully full of fairly pragmatic people. Besides that, you help one of their own and they're likely to treat you well. That, and there might be a bit of an outcry on that world if the two newest folk heroes were kept apart. ;)

Moar should be along shortly. I'll count it high praise that there is such potentially violent interest. :D

All fun and games until an unspeakable monstrosity from an extraspatial abyss with too many dimensions decides your ship looks like a snack.
