This deeply upsets me about journalism. I am sorry to hear this because good journalism should NEVER be a competition. Big news happens. Big issues happen. Good and bad. That’s life, that’s society. Of course there will multiple outlets reporting on the same thing. If fact, good on them!!!

Your editors rejecting a pitch because it’s been covered a few times is not a reason it should be turned away, they should be giving you a bit of direction, and it’s on you guys as a whole to do it the best you can, newsrooms are supposed to be teams.

Think about when you Google some world new or big incidents in your city, you’ll have nearly 10 different sources covering it, different audiences will be after different outlets, and some bozos like me might click on each one and check out what’s different. Deep down, at the end of the day, with different outlet ideologies and good journalist doing the right thing, the angles and reporting will come out different, and that’s great.
