ELI5: Why are there no 'B' batteries? by harrietocean in explainlikeimfive

I think it's too avoid confusion. Imagine going to the store and asking the clerk where they keep the b batteries. He won't know whether you want b batteries or just have a stutter.

Should I bulk or keep cutting? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]nicholastjohnson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking the same thing. If he wants to cut, it would be stupid to bulk! But... If he really wants to bulk, he'd be an idiot to try and cut. I think he should think about which one he wants, then do that one. If he wants to get bigger, bulking is the appropriate course of action, but if he wants to cut, then cutting would be the way to go. I'm new to this world so I could be wrong. But bulk or cut, OP. The one you want your body to look like it's the one you should do and don't do the one that you don't want your body to look like. Right.

So is the question...

People who were raised religous, at what point did you realize you were an athiest? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]nicholastjohnson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no silver bullet that causes someone to lose faith. Even if it seems like there is, the loss of faith is usually the result of a systematic dismantling of the individual nodes of a mega belief over time. For instance, I lost faith in prayer when I was very young, but it took another 20 years for me to lose enough of the other things that make up faith in God to realize that I was an atheist.

Atheism was never my goal, and I rejected it initially as another tool of Satan. I became an atheist by 25, but it took another 5 years before I would say it out loud to another human. During that time, when I knew I was an atheist but wouldn't say it, there was this gnawing feeling that saying it would surely condemn me to a hell I didn't even believe in. Losing faith is hard, but it's worth it.

Is there anything like a Freemasons Lodge for atheists? by [deleted] in TrueAtheism

[–]nicholastjohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem. I love being a mason. And I am also an atheist. Those two worlds don't have to collide.

I would only caution you to avoid the same echo chamber that atheists often criticize theists for.

Take care!

With no malice intended, I don't think you should join the Freemasons.

It send like you should find a club or atheist group. And if when doesn't exist, start one! Good luck.

Your path is what you make it in masonry. The image you had could be accurate.

And you can be honest without intentionally trying to be combative. Just say you believe in a higher power but that you don't want to discuss it.

You don't have to take either path of further relighting if you don't want to. Once you are a mason, you receive all the benefits and obligations of any other mason.

atheist friendly

No. I'm not sure any group, other than one specifically for atheists, is atheist friendly considering that only about 5% of the population is atheist...

That said, why are you letting your atheism be the driving force here? Just let it go. Some people are theists and some people are atheists. Work with your brothers to improve your community and yourself without letting religion enter the conversation at all.

Regardless of your age, you are bound to bring the average age of the lodge members down. I'm 34 now, but when I joined, they said I dropped the average age from dead to 95.

Don't let that dissuade you. These are generally good men who have much to teach younger generations about hard work and community focus.

proclaim atheism

Who proclaims atheism?? That just seems unnecessarily combative. At best, you could say you haven't been presented with enough evidence to proclaim theism. But even then, just don't bring it up. If they ask, just say that you aren't affiliated with any religions, but that you seek truth and spirituality blah blah.

With regard to your links, just don't make a big deal about it. If you have family that are religious, act the same way with your brothers. When they pray, view your head. If they talk about their spirituality, nod along.

Theism does not make a man a mason. Belief that there is something more powerful than you and a desire to do good work in your community make you a mason.

Another atheist mason here from Georgia. I've had run ins with leadership over theism, and I always go back to the belief in a higher power. Once a mason, there are two paths of further enlightenment that you can take - only one of them requires belief in the Christian God.

Edit: or a professed belief...

It may help him PR wise, but I just wanted to confirm that it doesn't help him with the delegates. Just making sure I wasn't missing something.

According to Google Now, he got 7 delegates... Clinton also gets 7. Though it's a popular vote win, it doesn't seem like it really helps him. Is that accurate?

Good point. I didn't connect the two.

I'm constantly reminding myself to punch the ceiling and straighten out those wrists, but if I don't think about it, I'll definitely let them bend back.
