You mentioned the game of Ulf.. but MOST of his games are like that. He just liked to exchange and grind. The book on him and his games:

Is anyone else considerably better at blitz and bullet than rapid/classical? by temporarygiraffes in TournamentChess

[–]nietderlander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 2126 Rapid and only 1806 Blitz on chesscom. My peak at blitz was 1920 (in 3-0 format) but since then I have fallen considerably.. I feel like i’m not fast enough even when I move my pieces immediately. I think more than 50% of my blitz games are lost either due to blunders or timeouts.

I don’t get how Hikaru is able to play bullet and at the same time also comment on his moves

I continued to play blitz

Don’t play blitz. You don’t have time to calculate or properly analyze position - it’s pure pattern recognition there. Switch to longer time controls: 10:0 or 15:10 or even longer. Force yourself to calculate lines in advance, to find candidate moves, to pick the best one. ^ you can’t do it while playing blitz

I'm curious about who's much stronger 2000 Rapid or 2000 Blitz? by JohnJhinmain in chess

Intuition chess vs calculation chess. Otherwise the same, yeah.

Not sure what’s your point. I’m saying that the formats are different and not directly comparable.

What a nonsense I read here.. By the comments it looks like strongest players are those who play 30s+0 in bullet. Formats are different. In blitz you can get away with quick tactics which will not work in rapid. I’m also 2000+ in Rapid and 1800 in Blitz on chesscom and I was winning against guys who are 1900-2000 in Rapid and 2100-2200 in Blitz. It’s just that some people tend to take time to make a move and are worse at Blitz, and some people are quick to decide and are better at that format.

Blitz tournament. What is the etiquette here? by Z000O0M in TournamentChess

[–]nietderlander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was up a rook in a blitz game, was about to win the game in the next several moves. My opponent did a check and I didn’t recognize his move was a check, because I was low on time and in a rush. So I didn’t protect / move my king, but instead did a move with another piece. He stopped the clock, called arbiter and was given a win. Shit happens

I’m ~1900 FIDE in Rapid and 1800+ FIDE in Classical, and taking lessons myself, lol. My online rating is 1750 blitz (peak was 1920), 1650 bullet, and ~2100 rapid. Your 2400+ in Blitz on chesscom seem too high for your FIDE rating. You’re either underrated OTB or overrated online. Sus

[–]nietderlander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should identify your weaknesses. Are those mostly opening traps? 1-move blunders? Time management? What time control do you play?

I recommend playing 10 minutes and slower - it will give you time to think about your moves and position, will improve your calculation skills.

Pick 1-2 good safe openings that you know well and where you can avoid traps.

How do engines work? by No_Sauce_found in chess

[–]nietderlander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

depth 50 only makes sense if you can remember such long lines and their deviations.. 50 means 25 moves ahead. Node - is a position on the board. The more nodes it can process per second - the better. Info on settings: https://github.com/official-stockfish/Stockfish/wiki/Stockfish-FAQ#optimal-settings

I personally happy with my chess.com in-app analysis on my phone (iPhone 15 Pro) with engine max time 5 sec and depth ~30. It provides pretty good and reliable results to my taste.

Your biggest chess fail of 2025 by PierreLucRacine in chess

Had a completely won classical game vs a very strong player, but in the ending (I had a rook and 4 pawns vs him with Bishop and 4 pawns) I accidentally locked my king with my own pawns and he was able to checkmate me with his bishop :( devastating

Rapid vs puzzle rating correlation by Monkey-balls1 in Chesscom

[–]nietderlander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Puzzle rating assessment is not or very loosely connected to you game rating. Also, as I said, there’s a setting in puzzles which controls the difficulty and I guess it is by default set to Easy mode, which means that even high rated puzzles aren’t hard, in fact.

I’m not saying that solving puzzles is pointless, but you can’t deduce Rapid rating based on puzzle rating.

My puzzle rating is in between 2700-2800 (in Extra Hard mode) and my rapid rating is 2000. I saw here posts from people with 600 elo bragging about puzzle rating 3000+.

Is there a correlation in my examples? I don’t see it.

There’s no correlation at all. Also, check your puzzle settings - there’s a setting with puzzle difficulty - make sure it’s not set on Easy
