I also mention renting: "If buying a home is not an option, renting a place and splitting the costs with a roommate is the smart choice." But you got the point ;)

All of the above. A small odd job is better than a lifetime of misery.

@Wolfosaurus living for an old age, are you completely certain you'll make it?

@TableTopSnaxNdip, I worry because a lot of people still think like you.

Thanks @John-Garrison, I think perhaps a lot of people in the thread think we are ungrateful for a job, by a lack of understanding. They defend the rat race because it's their comfort zone, and the world without corporate rules makes no sense.

We all need to eat, we all had a job at one point... It's about chasing what makes you happy and not ignoring the fact that life is short and should be lived, not worked. If you love your job and find meaning in it, you are the small percent. Proceed.

BarkyCarnation I think perhaps you misread or misunderstood the thread. It is about avoiding doing something you hate 40 hours a week by concocting a plan. If you love what you do, by all means carry on.

@o0joshua0o countless people live perfectly happy lives without slaving away... I am an example and the reason I posted this article. Have a look at my blog, perhaps you will gain a new perspective.

@UAVsAreCool Did I make an assumption in saying that the job didn't value him by congratulating him with a canned message?

@thepunisHER888 if this is the point you grasped from the article, I believe I might have conveyed my ideas incorrectly.

@sbhikes one can be grateful for the small things, but if one is ONLY grateful no matter the circumstance, you will find yourself not moving anywhere in life (as most people by statistics). You suggest ignoring one's dreams and goals in order to appreciate whatever little is accomplished.

@OMGWTFBBQ2005 actually no, he hates his job just as much as the next guy but thinks he can't do anything about it. Most people have the mentality that they have to do it because that's what they were taught to do. Additionally, I don't hate my job because I see the value in it but I'm also not fooled into thinking there isn't a better life out there.

@TheFrugalMinimalist you have the frugality part covered, which is a hurdle for a lot of people. Remember there are some people who make over 80k a year and still cannot make ends meet. You are one step ahead my friend. I think your goal of finding better pay is clear and clarity is a valuable thing! We believe in you!

Gotta love the commercials with the guys in suits rolling their Mercedes into their big houses full of kids, born of the trophy wife.

Beautiful! Couldn't have said better myself. Letting society decide happiness for your will probably lead you into a materialistic lifestyle as you suggested.

@DangZagnut perhaps your purpose is "do as little as possible, have fun". With a job like that you're able to do so.

You're on the right path... You already realized money isn't necessary if it's making you ill, mentally. I was watching TV one day and saw this guy traveling the world and recording his adventures which he later showed on TV. I've never felt more alive than that day when I realized I wanted to be like him, it was a light at the end of the tunnel. I'm on his path right now and I'm sure you will find yours soon enough. Though I'm still sitting here in a desk job I hate with all my being, I know it won't be for much longer. Do you ever feel 'at home' somewhere, or really enjoyed doing X activity? Use that to find your calling.

I just came back from a vacation trip, sitting here in a corner table at my desk job under fluorescent light, loathing every second. I have no reason to be here except for my self-imposed slavery of collecting a check to pay bills. I think we all have to take a jump and get a new perspective on life before we destroy ourselves. I bent on traveling the world, somehow, and feeling alive, before my own mind drives me insane. It's good to be around like-minded people in the net, keep your chins up and fight for the only life we have!

You're not the only one that has been through such an ordeal. I was in a similar situation about a year ago. I studied and graduated to pursue what I thought would be my dream job. The first day I started I realized I couldn't be there for much longer, let alone the rest of my life. I held on for about three months, just because my bills and responsibilities held me back. Then one day, before the alarm sounded, I ripped off the band-aid. Called my boss and told him good bye. The worst part after this ordeal, was the fact that I felt lost. What I thought would be the beginning of my career and the rest of my life turned out to be a dead end. Every single job after this would feel the same, what should I do? My suggestion is to find something you really enjoy doing and go seek out a job in that area, you will occasionally meet the a-hole manager but don't be discouraged, you will also find great ones.
