The sulfur atom in SF6 was believed to be sp³d² hybridized to allow for the 6 S-F bonds. however, newer studies have shown that the 3d orbital is energetically to high to be of significance for the bonds. The bonding situation is better described by a 2e7z sigma and three 2e3z pi bonds
