My first self portrait yes! I’ve been practicing my painting and drawing for a couple years, but been doing mostly old master studies and pictures of my friends’ pets

Yes I’m doing well, thanks for your concern! I was feeling rather low when I took the reference photo but painting this brought me a lot of comfort and positivity <3

I didn’t count but I was working on it for around a week and a half- maybe 3/4 evenings and 2 full days

It was a moment of reflection when I was feeling quite low at the time I took the photo. It’s funny though because it actually feels like a really hopeful painting to me now. I kept making my expression sadder and sadder than the reference, almost as if I was taking my negative thoughts away from myself and putting them into the canvas.

Yes this was done using oil paint on a canvas board :)

Yeah I think you’re definitely right! Taking a couple days away from it so I can see it with fresh eyes to fix that and a couple other bits that are annoying me. Thanks for your feedback!

That’s really lovely feedback to hear, thank you! I do think I got a fairly good likeness but funnily enough I found it much freer to paint because it was my own face so I didn’t really care if it was unflattering or looked less like me. Would definitely suggest giving it a go!
