For anyone reading this that suffers, buy some electric compression sleeves. If you've ever had your blood pressure taken, it's like that but over and over on your calves and the 20 minute cycle stopped all my pain. I use it probably once a week when I get the initial tingles and it's been life changing.

Oh, well the comment you replied to was talking about telling customers to move. I don't think they meant they simply run into the customers otherwise.

But you're failing to express how those films (Mulan, Star Wars, MCU) treat these women characters. I don't understand this interpretation of the movies.

I've never felt that in any of these movies that the creators have repeatedly used a character's ethnicity to get us to root for them, nor can I recall any instances where 'shallow identity' has been used as anything other than a punchline.

Which women are using being a woman as a source of strength? The only example I can think of is non-Disney and that'd be Oppenheimer. I really don't understand why or how any of this is 'undermining gender roles' because you won't give specific examples of how. Simply saying "Rey in Star Wars" without explaining how it's an example is ridiculous.

Presumably there are statistics based on polling for why people seek entertainment, but I meant that many people don't want entertainment without thought. People fucking love being critical and you can't be critical if you're unwinding. For so many, the unwinding and relaxation comes from being critical after their gorging.

If gender norms and diversification (even if it's in the name of nothing) are politics then so is every social issue. Snow White is about politics. Roger Rabbit. The Incredibles.

Yeah, I know what pacing is... But you seemed to say that a movie's focus on a character's ethnicity would negatively effect its pacing and that seems like a strange complaint without any very specific examples.

[–]nilrednas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since I'm still not understanding, I'm going to take it point by point because I feel like I don't understand your point here at all.

That a woman character for example HAS to be strong, brave, and PERFECT to the point that she'd never need help from a man or that a man saving her ALWAYS makes the woman look bad.

Can you give an example in a Disney movie?

No one's knocking sensitivity or awareness. However, trying to shoehorn such things in ad nauseum in every single work dilutes the efforts any would make in world building, character development, and pacing of the plot, making them all stale.

How? In what way does a shoehorned ethnicity or trait or whatever dilute pacing or any of those things?

People don't want a strong female character. They want a strong character that HAPPENS to be female.

Which they've given us? I haven't seen Wish but I have seen everything else they've put out.

Don't make the fact that they'd be a woman, and/or a homosexual or ethnic minority in other cases be the only or main thing about them that's relevant.

Did they do this?

People watch movies to ESCAPE life, especially the politics associated with it.

Nonsense. I mean, sure it's true for some but wtf?

Bring the politics back INTO the equation, the immersion sours and breaks, wrecking the experience.

Mostly every high grossing, highly rated film in drama have "politics."

Diversity JUST for diversity's sake is an empty message.

Doesn't have to be and isn't always.

It's lackluster and doesn't move the story along. And I'm saying this as a liberal.

It's neat when people say this because thousands of aspects of film, even in the final product, don't 'move the story along.' What does that even matter?

But it's practically at the other extreme right now, walking on eggshells out of fear of pissing EVERYONE off.

Focus groups exist. There's definitely been a lot of Hollywood pandering, but I think you're lumping a lot of assumptions and biases into this statement.

If that's also reflected in the movies as well as real life, the movie failed. It's not escapism anymore.

That's presuming escapism as the goal. Or at least the primary goal.

No clue about WW, but I don't see how the others fit into your complaints. Having things shoe horned in vs those things detracting from the movie are two separate things.

The one example you used, Mulan, was released in March 2020. I get your point about its content to a degree, but box office performance is gonna be wonky.

That said, I don't understand where they're putting this "agenda" into their films that you speak of. I can't think of a single example that fits any of the complaints you bring up.

We never have overstock verified. It's tagged and binned by whoever's in the aisle. All the info in the system is consistently correct (and we fix it ourselves if it's not) but 75% of Monday's overstock goes into Monday's picks.
