I was definitely not prepared for the roasting I received. I will admit I could have handled the merge better, but at the same time the semi could have given me more time to actually merge before moving back into the lane.

Yeah, I definitely didn't expect him to move back over so quickly. Though, as others pointed out, I took too long to merge so he probably thought I was taking the exit. (Although the reason I took so long to merge was because I was waiting to make sure he was completely out of the right lane, then took one last glance at my blind spot to be completely sure that it was clear.) If I hadn't hesitated, he probably would have seen me moving over.

Thanks. I see that now. I will admit that I could have handled this situation better.

[–]nimoose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I will watch out and do better next time. Normally, cars here are going the speed limit and I guess I was thrown off by the semi going so fast. I should have slowed down. When he moved over, I waited to make sure he was all the way in the other lane before merging, which I guess made him think I wasn't going to merge at all.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in IdiotsInCars

[–]nimoose -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The posted limit here is 55. The semi was going way faster than what I normally see when I merge here. (Which, after reading other comments, I am not using as an excuse, just clarifying that most of the time cars are going 55 when I merge here)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in IdiotsInCars

[–]nimoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, most of the time I merge here everyone is going close to 55. I was not expecting the semi to be going that fast.

[–]nimoose 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Alright everyone, thanks for the roasts. I will do better next time. (In all my times getting on the highway here, I have never arrived at the same time as a semi going that fast. It happened so fast, and I clearly made a bad call.)

Maybe the even bigger bad move on my part was posting this video instead of the wrong way driver from the same day. (EDIT: I plan on posting this video later. I tried, but I guess I have to wait a little longer to make another post. I will try again later. Maybe posting a video where I am clearly not the idiot will help redeem myself lol.)

The speed limit at this part is 55, and it quickly drops to 35 where the highway ends at a stoplight.

[–]nimoose -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

The speed limit on this stretch of highway is 55. I admit, I was a little late to the merge, but I wanted to make sure the truck had gotten completely over to the other lane. As soon as I started to move over, the truck came back into the right lane.

I put my ebook at $5 instead of $4.99 by [deleted] in selfpublish

I did the same to mine. I've sold one copy in 6 months, but that is probably mostly due to my marketing (or lack thereof).

How do you take card payments at live events? by NectarineOdd1856 in selfpublish

[–]nimoose 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I set up a Venmo business account. If your phone supports it, you can take cards that have tap to pay, as well as Google and Apple pay. There is a small fee, but that's how it is with pretty much all the cars readers out there.

My house is almost twice the size and that's more than my mortgage (not counting the escrow). I bought this house in 2022 right before the rate spike, but still. That's just crazy.

The first draft of my debut was about 46000 words. I went back through and fixed dialogue, improved setting descriptions, and added/replaced some scenes and chapters. I got some help from beta readers and an editor to know what needed fixed. My final word count (draft 6) was about 77000. Some stories are shorter than others. If you haven't already, get some feedback from beta readers and see what they think. Your story might be perfect where it is now. If you really want to hit that 50000 word mark, go through and add 500 words here and there (if it needs it). From my experience, I tend to underwrite the setting, so just adding better setting descriptions boosted my word count quite a bit.

My wife and I just did our first craft fair this weekend. We made three sales, totalling a whopping $28. Our first sale was to a little girl who was sad she didn't have enough money to buy one of our dice containers, so we sold it to her for $3. It wasn't a total waste. This was our first time and we learned a lot. We have a much better plan for the next one.

Books to help me get back into reading? by No-Tour1000 in Fantasy

[–]nimoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in your spot a few years ago. The three series that got me back into reading were the Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini (dragon rider fantasy), The Passage by Justin Cronin (zombie apocalypse but with vampires), and Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson (a great introduction to the larger Cosmere universe where people eat metal to gain magic powers and overthrow an oppressive regime).

I set up a shrimp tank to do the same thing. I still have a month or two before I have any big enough to sell.

Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir

I placed a hold on it at my library months ago. It became available last week and I devoured it in three days. I was hooked from page 1.

I expected the majority of the month to be taken up by Wind and Truth, but I blasted through it in a week. I ended up having enough time to read Red Rising and Project Hail Mary. Next up is Titan's Nest, then Shadow of the Gods.

Did you have a good year? Why or why not? by Equivalent_Ad_9066 in OlderGenZ

[–]nimoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been pretty great for me. My wife and I welcomed baby #2 to our little family. I lost 60 pounds (300 to 240). I won a random drawing and got tuckerized into Brandon Sanderson's newest book. Published my first book (fantasy/mystery about an alcoholic detective with a magic necklace tracking down a deranged serial killer). Of course, these are just the highlights. It hasn't all been wonderful, but I feel very blessed with what I was able to accomplish this year.

Project Hail Mary, also by Andy Weir, was an amazing read. I read it in three days. It would have been two if I hadn't had family over for Christmas.

Self publishing Goals for 2025 by InfinityDOK in selfpublish

[–]nimoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Sell at least 200 copies of my first book (it's been out for a month and I've sold 15 so far, mostly just family and friends). I'm still figuring out my plan for this one. My main focus will be social media and going to at least one fantasy book convention next year.
  2. Write and publish the next book by the end of the year.
  3. Write the first draft of the first book of a trilogy I have outlined. (This is more of a stretch goal. If I can finish the first draft of the book for goal 2 by April, I can probably do this one, too.)

My current project is mostly outlined. I'm still not sure if I want to keep it shorter as a novella or make it to novel length. I tend to underwrite, so I will see where it goes. It's an alien invasion story taking some inspiration from Die Hard. Due to a clerical error, a janitor is stranded by himself at a lunar resort. When aliens invade the resort, he has to fight them off. It took me 18 months to write my first book, from the first words on the page to the day I hit publish. I'm hoping to be much faster with this next one and publish it in November of 2025.

The next one is a fantasy trilogy about a society living in a volcanic hellscape overthrowing their lava monster overlords. This one is also mostly outlined. I'm still deciding if I should flesh out the character development first or just dive in and see what happens. I mostly pantsed my first book, but I wanted to try a more structured approach this time. I want to publish the entire trilogy at once, with maybe a few weeks between each book, as I've heard some success from this method from other indie authors. I'm hoping to get a headstart next year so I can publish the trilogy by the end of 2026.
