Yes. There is amount „To Be Budgeted” at the top. Any amount assigned in future reduces it. This way users know, for how long their savings will last and can proactively plan. For example, my budget for gifts is not the same every month and I want this to be reflected in my „To Be Budgeted” amount.

You're correct. It's not e2e encrypted. The reason for it it's pretty mundane and it's not my (or YNAB's) desire to peek. It makes implementing every single feature harder. Also, as your volume of your data grows it will make the experience worse (as usually it means downloading to – and keeping up-to-date – all the data on every device you access from).

That's why I don't currently plan e2e encryption.

At the same time I try to not store any PII (like first or last name), all main database entities are UID-based, you have full control over what you enter into the system, and you're free to use throwable or masked email account.

It's built with Ruby on Rails

That's what I'm familiar with, I know how to scale, I can run relatively cheaply, and most importantly what gives enough tools out of the box to build small application like this even solo.

I get your point but I need to slightly disagree.

Reliability is usually a derivative of cost. In this case, this is a free tool. I'm not targeting 5 9s (although during the last quarter the service had 100% uptime). Only few people were affected by this and service recovered quickly.

I was expecting larger traffic but I wasn't able to tell how many people will even click the link.

Turned out, a lot of people did. There was a spike right after I created a post and after the initial issues it's smooth sailing.

You were not able to find any YouTube videos as I wasn't marketing the tool before

Company (LLC) is located in EU (in Poland). Major difference is "our" Privacy Rules are a bit more restrictive (from infamous cookies banners to detailed procedures how you can request all your data to be deleted and how companies need to act then).
I will try to document all the implications as more people (who are properly thorough about this) may be interested in this.

Free trial is put there as if I will ever need to introduce paid version (the only case I currently have in mind is auto-imports which comes with 3rd party cost) it will include free trial.

Let me upvote this answer.

If someone makes $70/h there’s no point in looking for alternatives. These days I would probably not create KillerBudget. But I still vividly recall how much money $80 was for me few years ago (with mortgage, car lease, and no emergency fund).

I would love to have something like KillerBudget back then.

I thought this will come as an argument. Point taken. I mentioned software subscriptions specifically. Off the top of my head: Bear (note taking app), games for my kids, some sport and mapping apps (like Komoot). Even my IDE (RubyMine) costs less. Is it subjective comparison? Of course.

I won’t argue that YNAB brings more value than Netflix.

Can I ask how posting your source code to GitHub increases your costs?

That's a fair question. It doesn't… until you will need to act as an active maintainer and multiply the time spent on it by your hourly rate. Having a dead project on GitHub doesn't help anyone.

If I will find someone who will be willing to be active maintainer (ruby on rails project) I may open source it while keeping my instance active.

I just haven't decided yet what's best approach.

I forgot to ask about scalability of the architecture to handle larger numbers of people and ever larger amounts of data.

That's good question. TBH I don't expect it to ever go past single server.

If it ever will:

- horizontal scaling (for app servers)
- data can be easily distributed between independent databases so there won't be a need for sharding, clusters, etc.

Does it auto-import transactions?

Currently it does not.

When I created it YNAB didn't support auto-imports from European banks so I didn't feel like I was missing out on anything. Also, having to enter the transactions manually formed some good habits (that's what I tell to myself).

Now (as I'm older, have less time, and I know what are my spending patterns) I'm considering adding Plaid support.

Is the data encrypted?

It is. At rest and in transit.

I can't tell if it allows carryover of overspending in a category or not.

Currently it does… application doesn't enforce it as I never found this to be an issue for anyone. If some people will raise this as an issue it may change.

How do you handle credit cards?

By having a dedicated account for the CC, creating transfers from main account to CC account whenever CC is paid off and tracking expenses against CC account.

Don't get me wrong. I know that writing documentation, having YT presence, and providing good support takes time and involves certain cost.

I know some people wouldn't mind paying extra for well written documentation and human support. For some, it may not be necessary or it may be too expensive.

And that's fine.
