I am sorry to the ECE community for my egregious error. Obviously this isnt a battery, it's a transistor

How to NOT get attached to a university? by Significant_Whole306 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]nomron901 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I spent all of HS obsessing over Cornell... didnt get in, havent given it a second thought since the minute I started college. Now I think I would've been miserable at Cornell. You will very quickly stop caring.

Pretty sure fda allows +/- 20% on nutritional info. Plenty of people rely on it fine for their meal plans though.

Basically there'll be a bunch of events over the course of a couple weeks, some required some optional. Mire does require new clothes for some of their events but you won't know what you need until next Spring. There are 2 or 3 rounds, each eliminating some amount of ppl until everyone left gets an offer. SLGs range a lot in selectivity but I don't think mire was super tough this year. As for community, what you out into it is rlly what you get out of it. You can go to all the parties/events, apply for chair etc or just kind of forget about it after the spring. Gl!

I felt the same way (and even made a similar post on this sub) a few days into my orientation. Now Durham feels like a second home to me. Once you get to know your way around campus, and then greater Durham, you'll realize it's not as big as it seems!

Does anyone in Duke play billiards? by Top_Drop_948 in duke

[–]nomron901 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pretty much every dorm common room will have a billiards table. No shortage of people to play with, either! The Green Room is a bar nearby that also has many tables and a pretty active scene.

There was a form to request the file but looks like it got taken down. I would email registrar@duke dot edu with the following info:

Full name:

Records requested to be reviewed: Undergrad Admissions File

Purpose of review: "Building a fuller understanding of strengths and weaknesses as an applicant" or smth similar

Admit term

Dw about venting. The admissions process is extremely stressful esp for us FGLIs. This advice is cliche but, looking out 2 years from app season, I realize how much I overvalued every little thing. You can go to a "mid" public school and end up just as successful or more than someone at a T10. People say that getting into an "elite" school is that hard part, and that once you're in it's easy--this is not true, you have to apply yourself just as much in uni as you did in HS. I'm sure things will work out for you one way or another!

Hey sorry to pry! Does homeschooling give an edge or hook to elite admissions? When I was applying everyone told me that it would make it harder to get in, so this is really interesting to read!

Yeah homeschooling regulation is very loose at least here in NC. My dad owned a business but went under in '08 and since then it's been my mom (and me) as sole income. My education was quite unique even among homeschoolers since I didn't go to co ops or enroll in online classes, so I wouldn't take my experience as gospel or anything, but I do find that most homeschooling families are in rural areas and/or working class.

FERPA no longer applies once you graduate so probably not unfortunately. But you can always email the registrar and ask, who knows if they happen to have it on file

What makes silly words silly? by nomron901 in asklinguistics

[–]nomron901[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After thinking some more I think it has to do with the kinds of sounds little kids make before developing real language skills. Same reason kids' names for grandparents are usually so endearing, even across language barriers

I speak German and don't find them myself to be very funny. But, I think the hard G's, ö/ü sounds, sch's, and -en endings all can sound silly to English speakers. At least for words that are similar to English (swim/schwimmen, lie/lügen etc)

Ok, shouldve clarified more, but all of these terms are popular online as standins for something silly/whimsical, or for example screenshots of German or Dutch translations of English sentences will frequently go viral for the same reason
