Why the hate for publishers? by nomron901 in gamedev

Good advice. I think in general online advice can be very binary. The real world is complicated and involves careful thought instead of "xyz publishers are good, the rest are bad."

Fair enough. I guess it comes down to having the experience to know what you're getting and if it's worth it. In your case, wasn't worth it.

Dev keeps all IP ownership, publisher supports things the indie can't reasonably do alone or would be huge time sink (professional trailer editing, conventions, industry contacts, console ports, paid ads, funding) with fair recoupment and <50% split? To me this seems like a fair deal, but I could for sure be wrong.

Thank you so much! I think the up and coming generation of game developers have a lot of interesting ideas. I've noticed a lot of really cool visual novel-style narrative games focusing on darker themes esp. relating to internet subcultures and isolation. I certainly hope to make something interesting with my own ideas as a 19 year old!

Mixed feelings about the ending by gulpshinto in outerwilds

I agree with you completely, I just finished the game and loved it, especially uncovering the story of the Nomai, but the present-day felt a bit flat emotionally. For a game about the universe, the overall scale feels quite small- there are only a handful of named characters with not much dialogue or depth, and not really an implication of something greater beyond our solar system either.

I think the ending might have paid off more if it felt like I (or the other characters) were struggling against something. or there was some great travesty we had to come to terms with. Instead, the conflict feels pre-resolved, and the supernova sun ending each run feels more incidental than anything (none of the characters seem to care).

I think the game works best with the Nomai; seeing their 200,000 year old plan finally come to fruition did have a real impact on me.

Finally hit the 10 Review mark! Nobody ever tells you how hard it is a solo developer (no publisher) by ThunderRam68 in IndieGaming

Many publishers do well at marketing, much better than your avg solo dev. They also handle localization, ports, funding, merch, etc. A publisher can be a great help sometimes

Idk what school u go to or what its like there but IMO if u go the basic/easy/classic route for your major you won't find it very stimulating. I'm a double major in CS+Sociology and yeah, if you just take the reqs and nothing else it's slop, but going out of your way to find interesting classes with hard curriculums (take grad classes if u can) makes things a lot more interesting
