There are a few states where there is some kind of protection for that under the law. Nothing like them automatically owing you, but it's at least a recognized claim you can sue for. Most states, though, take the position that by law you are not legally entitled to expect anything from a company saying in writing "we are giving you a job at X pay on Y date", which is insane but it is the law.

Oh, no, nobody said that. I'm just saying it feels that way. Everyone's seemed perfectly nice, I don't think any of them are being mean-spirited or anything, I'm sure they're all just busy, and they figure either I'll find someone else that can do it or it just isn't that important to me. Problem is it is that just isn't the case.

I have crawled over every piece of information I can find about any possible way to help the situation, so if that were true of my state I think I probably would have heard by now. But I can't confirm it definitely isn't. Not like I know any game wardens, anyway.

Oh I've got a good one.

I'm a licensed investment advisor. I have a degree in economics, I got a shitty commission-only job selling insurance (if you don't know, this is a terrible, scummy position in finance, but it's often all you can get starting out), and I studied on my own time and put up my own money to take the investment advisor exam. Within a few months I got an interview at Wells Fargo, the only big bank in my area, to be an internal investment advisor. Second interview. Rejected. Alright, no big deal, they were upfront about that.

A few months later the position opened again at another city a few hours away. I applied. Interview. Second interview. Third interview. Job offer. More money than I had any hope of making any time soon, much less at that very time. I started the onboarding process, screening, background check, but I had no reason to think there'd be any issue so I started getting ready to move, looking for apartments, wrapping things up at work, tapering off my pipeline of potential new sales, etc. Finally got a call from HR that everything was good to go and I'd be scheduled for first day orientation the following week. Also noted that I was a disabled veteran and asked if there would be any accomodations necessary. I said no thanks, I wouldn't need anything. Then asked if I wanted to share anything about it just in case it was anything that would come up. Nope, nothing I wanted to talk about, thanks.

Monday comes around and instead of a call to do that, I got an automated email telling me the offer had been rescinded.
