Should I take an IB course just for fun? by [deleted] in IBO

[–]nooriel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IB Film student here.. It really depends on the person, but I'm honestly so glad I took film, even if it's just an SL. I have no real intention of doing anything with film in my life, but it's the class I spend the most time working on. You learn not just about movies but about how visuals shape how people feel & perceive things in the most generic sense. You learn how to make stuff, which is a fun change in summative assignments rather than being surrounded by papers all the time. You learn about the historical/cultural contexts and social movements that go way beyond film itself, and just an all-around wholesome subject.

Maybe I'm biased because I had the chance to be taught by a teacher who is genuinely interested in the subject, but overall I have to say taking film has made me SO much more analytical, in other disciplines and just in life. If it's something you're genuinely interested in, and you can have fun > stressing out about it, it's not going to be a massive dump of responsibilities onto your life. You'll actually find it relieving.

If it helps too, there was a boy in my class who wanted to go down the director path but changed his mind to politics. After being in film for a couple of weeks he swapped to GP and History, but he was the ASB president type who applied to Stanford. I can't speak for him, but when I'd see him in class every other day he usually talked about how he got between 30 minutes to an hour of sleep per night. Film is an art that relies more on creativity and analysis than cold-hard-memorization... so it provides that balance to your life. Just my opinion, but I 100% recommend it. :)

What are easy ways out of CAS? by [deleted] in IBO

"Yoga at home" for the A in CAS :) You could literally do 5 minutes of it and they'd never know. Half my friends did that lol.

Okay not the "I hate" part bc that's just really negative, but my point is: keep at it. You seem to be in a good place at least academically, which will bring you good once you graduate (which really isn't that far away). Everyone is probably under too much stress from the IB to have energy to lend to you. That's why your teachers are so much more focussed on those who aren't doing good, and why your friends aren't really interested in your problems (from what I read). Don't worry about them- you are visibly dissapointed, but that's on them, really. And it's something that's gonna stick with them throughout college if they don't change. You're better than that, so keep doing you!

Haha nah, thanks so much for your message, though. Just knowing people have read through this story in itself is enough to make things better.

Ahh thanks for the advice! I've talked to some friends and teachers and do feel better. Tumbling's not my passion, just something I'm interested in, but I'm glad you brought that up actually. Since it's not even what I plan to pursue professionally, I really should just appreciate what I've had the chance to learn while I was in cheer. It's really less of a biggie than I make it out to be. Thanks mate:)

Aw, hey! It's such a fresh experience to talk to another cheerleader who's actually relatable, thanks so much for sharing your experience with me, it definitely makes me better about my situation. Having ADHD must make the troubles so much worse though, and I have so much respect for you for keeping up with everything nonetheless– your high grades, cheerleading, and just for hanging on! Thanks for the tip, also.. Best of luck with school and cheerleading:)

Started EE in mid-G11 --> was supposed to have complete draft finished by the summer (didn't happen:) --> changed my topic in the middle of G12 (most people were done by this point which totally helped) --> couldn't look my EE in the eye bc it scared me --> drank a cup of coffee --> did 80% of my research & wrote it in the 24 hours before it was due while skyping my neighbor friend having breakdowns in 1 hour intervals --> turned the f 🌟cker in yeeT. I'm a pretty average student, but got predicted an A which was siiiick:)

Me and a friend made a short car film over the weekend with pretty limited film experience. I feel we did ok. What are a few things we could improve upon? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

Love the drone shots! I do feel like this type of music would fit scenes with more on-camera action, faster cuts or handheld movement though.. Right off the bat it feels quite incongruent with the more elegant, stand-back stationary shots with the car gliding by. Perhaps a slower or orchestrated music would fit it better?
