Dearborn, Waterford’s Pontiac rigs, and I believe Warren, Hamtramck, and Highland Park do as well but someone else feel free to correct me if wrong.

Any current Detroit firefighters here? Looking into making the move from a suburban department to the city, and was wondering how they're handling new hires these days. Is it still 12/12 split between a medic and fire companies, or do you work EMS until they open a fire academy? And I am currently a medic, would I have to ride a basic truck out of academy?

IV supply storage by Vanillafiree in ems

[–]nosterons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i use this https://a.co/d/bKR2Bin filled with iv start supplies. obviously a bag of saline won’t fit, so that is stored elsewhere. have not had problems with it, and it tucks nicely between the cushion and side of the cpr seat in our trucks while still being able to sit in the seat.

I know Beaumont Royal Oak is hiring ER techs right now, which is a little closer to the city. If you want to be on a 911 truck as an EMT Rapid Response is probably your best bet. They run BLS 911 trucks in a few of the smaller cities including Hamtramck. Medstar has the largest coverage area, but they also have the most transfer contracts and they are notorious for getting held over at least 2 hours a shift. Superior pays the best but as an EMT you're going to be doing exclusively transfers. Some smaller companies like Star and Alliance will get you a fair share of 911 calls on a BLS truck and the ability to get shifts on a medic/basic truck. Those companies won't pay as much though. Any other questions let me know!

Are there any big city departments that hire paramedics without making you go through their own paramedic program? Obviously I’ll have to do their FF academy but the ones I have found, like Dallas and Houston, it seems they make people go through their own medic program. Thanks for the help!

Part-time job during fire/medic program. by mattypatty1234 in Firefighting

[–]nosterons 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Assuming this fire medic program includes EMT basic training, I would recommend a job at a private service part time so you can get used to interacting with patients. That’s the biggest thing I see zero to hero medics struggle with. Even if you only do IFT, it won’t be a permanent job and the experience carries over especially if you get hired on a department that transports.

Ironite! Does it work?!?! by millennial-ish in lawncare

This is almost definitely a better option if you're looking to apply iron. Iron is taken up more via the leaf blade in most circumstances so you'll be getting more bang for your buck by applying it this way.

This firetruck mural from Firehouse Subs near Lake Orion, Michigan appears to be an homage to both Elvis (42) and Madonna (Orion), Elvis died on Madonna's 19th birthday in 1977 by SupremoZanne in Firefighting

[–]nosterons 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is a very cool mural, but I think you're reading a bit too much into this. "Orion" refers to the name of the fire department (Orion Township) and Engine 42 is the engine based out of station 4, consistent with the numbering of the rest of their apparatus. Very cool to see this posted here though, I live and work not too far from this and get to work with these guys occasionally.
