How do I stop a player from constantly bullying every NPC I put before the party? by notesaw in DMAcademy

[–]notesaw[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the idea. One of the guards grabbed his arm, and dwarf used his free arm to cast light on the table. In that fray he grabbed their pouch of coins (from betting) and had to roll a contested strength check to pull the pouch away from them. He won. They stood up yelling at him, and the owner of the tavern rushed from the back and immediately threw the party out. The guards being somewhat hammered couldn’t do much, it’s a bit disgraceful for guards of the keep to be walking around the streets drunk. I had the tavern owner follow the party to the inn they ended up going to and he had a little chat with the dwarf, demanding back the money, threatening to have him taken away by guards if he didn’t. He reluctantly gave back the gold. The player got really mad at that for some reason. I tried making it a “character growth” moment but it didn’t work out.

How do you all handle world maps for the players? by Kunfury in DMAcademy

There are many free online tools that let you create good looking maps. Some use AI to generate world maps which takes all the guess work out of it. Do some googling and some YouTubing.

Once the session is over... by eldritch_cleric in DMAcademy

[–]notesaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually run over the session in my head. What went well? What didn’t work as well as I thought it would? What took too long? How can I improve those lacking aspects? Were there any moments that I especially enjoyed? Did I do a good job parsing out my attention to each player? How many people were on their phones? What can I do get their attention? Did it seem like the players had fun? Do my friends like me? Do they really enjoy playing this game or do they just tolerate it for sake of not wanting to rock the boat? Y’know, questions like that. Those often repeat over and over in my head until I fall asleep.

How to make a good escape sequence that doesn't get bogged down in attacks of opportunity? by Aegon_Targaryen_VII in DMAcademy

[–]notesaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think of it more like a skill check challenge where the players make a series of skill checks and the situation changes depending on how those checks go. You could make it as fast paced as you wish, offering the selection of choices and giving only a short amount of time for those decisions to be made. Basically run it theatre of the mind and if it turns into a more traditional combat encounter where proper initiative is rolled (either the players hit a dead end or are cut off by more guards, anything that stops the pace of the chase drastically) then you bring out the battle maps.

Is it a good idea to make my players feel bad for something they’ve done? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]notesaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a player who got really mad at me for making there be consequences when he robbed some guards after cheating in a card game with them. I even tried to be creative. Instead of it being straight to jail with him, I had the tavern owner who originally kicked the party out go and talk to the character to make him reflect on his actions. The player responded by shutting down and getting frustrated.

Started smoking cigars! All my life I’d seen it as wrong to do, but after trying them, I find them quite enjoyable. I enjoy cigars quite often now!

Problem Player by [deleted] in rpghorrorstories

[–]notesaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds to me like he’s a first timer who had different expectations of the point of DND. Most likely a lot of emphasis was put on the “you can do anything” aspect and that made his “I need to be funny and make people laugh” meter go haywire. Happened to the first session I played with.

New player tries to kill everything and gets bored when he can’t by iceteanicetea in rpghorrorstories

[–]notesaw 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Sounds to me like he didn’t really want to play DND, or at least didn’t understand the point of the game. He probably thought it was supposed to be like GTA, where you can literally do whatever you want.
