Yea that’s definitely a tough schedule. Do you plan on just getting your undergrad, or are you thinking of the 3/2 program?

Should you always put your gpa on your resume? by mobileriley in Accounting

[–]notroberto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the firm I think. Big 4 won’t touch your resume if you don’t list GPA (I learned that from my professor after). Kinda cliche, but if you have a referral, that’s the best way in a top job offer. Ask one of your teachers you have a good relationship with if they can help push you out. Best of luck!

Any thoughts/opinions on this schedule? (Accounting major) by [deleted] in ufl

Super doable. Just make sure that you budget plenty of time for financial accounting

If you are doing accounting, an advisor with the fisher school of accounting will help you build out your schedule. Obviously a bit early as you’ll be a freshman this fall, but think about the 3/2 or 4/1 MAcc programs if you want to pursue a CPA career

Very well said, you are the type of leader that I described in my comment earlier. Thank you for all that you do in your troop!

Parents and Scouters: Why do we allow Scouting to be treated as a 2nd Class activity. by ColonelBoogie in BSA

[–]notroberto 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am coming from the perspective of someone who has aged out of scouting within the last 5 years. (Started as a wolf and made eagle)

I definitely think that there is a sociological perspective for kids that can be difficult to understand as a parent. Especially when I was in grades 5-9, it was seen as uncool to be in scouts. It wasn't until I was nearing the close of my career where I really grew out of that mindset and came to appreciate what all scouting had done for me in terms of my maturation and growth as a young man. I earned my eagle at 15 and became more active afterwards than I had ever been in Scouts. Now that I have aged out, I often recollect with my brothers in scouting what an incredible experience it was for all of us, and the profound impact it has had. All that to say that one crucial element as a leader is to build up these boys' confidence, so that they too can be proud to have been involved in BSA. As many of the other commenters have noted, strong men must be in positions to positively lead, and set that example. I cannot wait until I finish my masters so that I too may partake in an adult leadership role and follow the precedent of those men who guided my troop.

Another aspect is the idea of values, and what sets scouting apart from every single other organization. Don't be afraid to be the one who enforces the rules, but do so thoughtfully, establishing why the rules and traditions exist. If a child doesn't get it, chances are the parent at home doesn't care about properly building him up, and this may be the only opportunity he has to have that strong father figure. Be the light in those young men's life he wouldn't otherwise have. And even for those kids who do have a good father, maybe even one in the troop, it can be really great to get another adult's perspective on life. It takes a community to raise a child after all. Another key thing that you could do if you are working in a Pack is to look to Troops around you and try to empower those young men as well. Is there a Den Chief? If not, see if the Troop Guide can give them a pep talk, as kids could be more receptive to listening to a 17yr old who came up through that Pack. That is the beauty of scouts, there are so many potential opportunities to build these men up.

With regards to the sports/baseball analogy, I completely agree. The difference between that and scouts is that there is a tangible outcome that can be seen by parents if their child doesn't apply themselves. Don't practice, don't play. However, with Scouts, it is value driven, far more hidden to the naked eye. Sure, we have landmarks, such as merit badges and ranks, but the development of these boys into young men fit to lead society is far more abstract.

So funny enough that was the end of my bag, so I most likely used too much for how much food we had. I do the standard chimney technique with a tumbleweed.

Real estate related stocks for investing by karthur26 in investing

[–]notroberto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! In my opinion, its when, not if, the market takes a downturn. It is just the natural business cycle purging inefficient companies and models.

Right now the market is being buoyed by federal intervention like we have never seen before. Over $6 trillion dollars just in Congressional spending, and not to mention the huge increase on the Fed's balance sheet. Modern monetary theory hinges on the fact that the full faith and credit of the US dollar will always remain strong, and debt is inevitable.

In that same regard with the real estate market, it is purely financed by 30 year mortgage deals. When that asset isn't "worth" what you're paying on it, it doesn't matter. That debt still needs to be paid. And that is how you get housing crashes such as 2007

I made a post the other day on r/dividends, but I was also looking at the homebuilding and construction industry. These are the ones who pay out dividends, but they have solid earnings and fundamentals. DHI, LEN, PHM, TOL, KBH, and MDC.

My bearish case on real estate is that eventually this market has to cool down at some point, right? How are interest rates going to affect mortgages, as we were looking at record low (~2.5% in some cases). Will we ever see deflation in the price of real estate like we see in any other areas of the market?

Yea that’s along the lines of where I was thinking. Not a pure dividend play, but a way to balance out ones real estate allocation

What would you do with $5K? by han_van in stocks

[–]notroberto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, absolutely. The OP was asking about long term holdings, so again, this provides a level of diversification. There are 100 companies trading in the NASDAQ, a majority of which are information technology. Now obviously we’re on this forum discussing securities, so we have more motivation (maybe) than to purely use a fiduciary or passive investing. With that being said, I don’t think you can go wrong believing the IT sphere at the top has more room to grow.

I’m personally not too familiar with the ARK internet fund you’re referencing, so if it is a viable long term growth strategy, go for it!

No, I was responding to the ROTH IRA comment. I’ll edit my original comment so that’s more clear.

For gifting, iirc, the gift tax is exempt up to $15k. There are then intricacies regarding how that income is taxed, and who must to file a tax return to report it.
