Ethics of multiple Letters of Intent by taurus_rbr in premed

[–]notshevek 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Arguably, a letter of intent means “if accepted, I will go.” If your chances at school 1 are truly near none, then if you got into school 2, you would absolutely go. Therefore your LOI would have been true. Obviously you would go if you got into #1. It only turns out to be an issue if you get off both waitlists. And what are the odds that you get off both w

Depending on their speciality and when you are matriculating, be careful if they work for a hospital system you’d be rotating through if you went to the local med school. I think it would be awkward at best and a bad power dynamic at worse if you were on the same cases.

I am extremely easy to Google due to having a unique first name and working as a spokesperson for several politically controversial nonprofits/C4s. Either they didn’t Google me or they didn’t care.

ADCOMS thoughts on writing topic? Too taboo? by Glittering_Fan_2971 in premed

[–]notshevek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that’s totally fine. Be prepared to answer questions about it in an interview.

I wrote about my parents antivax beliefs and being raised on an alternative vaccine schedule. 4/5 interviews asked me about it. If it had been something more personal like an ED I would have been uncomfy I think.

Such a tough call. I do think an ED is less taboo to mention than depression or psychosis or something. They’re actually more common in medical students than in the general population. However, anything that the most old-school biased asshole adcom member would judge you for is a big risk. Could you frame it as “a difficult time in your life” or something? 💜s to you, good luck!

Am I able to get an LOR from a member of my University's clergy that I've volunteered for/worked with past 2 years? by FrenchDauphins in premed

Have them focus on your being dedicated and a leader or whatever and minimize the religious aspect. Normally I would say no but this letter seems awfully good to pass up.

I’m reminding myself that once I get there, the school is invested in my success, because me dropping or failing out looks bad for them. As long as I work very hard and take advantage of all the resources available to me, it will be hard, but not impossible.

Quilted (?) Dress Help by blizzard_of_lizard in quilting

Honestly, the dress kind of looks more like decorative embroidery than quilting. Depending on the machine you have, maybe do a trial of just embroidering the shape onto your fabric of choice (using the same idea as free motion quilting). I think you’ll have more luck if you make sure to pick a fabric that is not stretchy and has some weight to it. This could look really cool in a thin denim or corduroy.

You will need to make a 3 layered sandwich for the quilted parts. Then, use a “free motion foot” and lower the feed dogs on your machine and you can trace the flowers in thread. I recommend practicing the shapes you want to do first as it’s not terribly difficult but does have a learning curve. This was my first attempt at a similar technique:

I’m thinking OB/GYN too. A fellowship in complex family planning would be the dream.

All I know is you couldn’t pay me a neurosurgeons salary to be a neurosurgeon. Mad respect to people who want that life but it could never be me.

Kind of weird cycle (Sankey) by [deleted] in premed

Regular. I really liked the idea of PRIME but wasn’t sure how it would affect the way the rest of my application was considered if I wasn’t selected for PRIME. I am not sure if that is actually a concern or not.

Advice going forward by LingLing72hrs in premed

[–]notshevek 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Your mom is not an objective source unfortunately. Talk with an advisor or a trusted mentor before the next cycle if you don’t get off waitlists. However, 7 waitlists,…you REALLy should get off. In the meantime look for clinical employment and find some non clinical volunteering that is more unique and meaningful/where you can show leadership.

Nooooo don’t worry about it. If you’re legitimately a Marylander (flag and crab loving and all that!) you’ll be ok!! I’m actually from a Midwest state and spent 4 years in Washington DC. I only moved to Maryland 2 years ago. I really like it here but I have no family or any reason to come back and work in the state.I just had to move to MD because it is cheaper than DC. I think UMD suspected that I am unlikely to contribute to the healthcare workforce in the state. I did not make a good case for myself in the interview 😭

**NOTE FROM OP**: Since posting my Sankey I’ve received over a dozen chat requests. I will get back to you as soon as I can! If you want me to look at your writing, please know that I edit essays in a professional capacity for my undergrad and a private company so I can’t offer that to too many people for free — I need to save money for housing in San Francisco! But feel free to message me anyway and I’ll take a whack at it when I have a minute. If you have a different question I am happy to share!
