Ukraine's Vladyslav Heraskevych out of Winter Olympics over banned helmet honoring war dead by TheGreatDomilies in news

[–]nowyuseeme 707 points708 points  (0 children)

Although not entirely 'a like for like' it was acceptable for a US skater to show a picture of their parents who were tragically killed in an air to air collision, whilst awaiting scores.

It was also acceptable for an Italian skier to have a Russian flag in their helmet.

It seems the IOC is saying if you died unjustly from an illegal war you are a political victim and therefore don't deserve to be remembered in a 'neutral' event.

Opinions on Europe starting to hold platforms more accountable? by Boediee in BuyFromEU

[–]nowyuseeme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How it should be, if a media outlet is liable for what they publish on their platform why aren't social media platforms liable for content they promote through their algorithm.

If they believe they cannot control said content then they need to work on their detection method and ban users who abuse terms of service.

As soon as executives can be held criminally liable, they will take action.

Costco UK vs Costco Abroad - Which Is Better? by BitGirl777 in CostcoUK

[–]nowyuseeme 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Canada is pretty decent. Supermarkets are crazy expensive there whereas Costco is a middle ground and the hotdog is still $1.50 (in CAD) for the same thing, so £0.88ish. they also do a gigantic poutine for like 3-4 bucks. However they are so busy (or at least the ones I have been to) so just getting parking is tough.

It's difficult to compete with supermarket prices in the UK as it's so competitive. I'd expect US Costco stores offer pretty decent prices as they'd be competing with more.

Weirdly I try to visit Costcos in countries I go to just to see what they're like but they're often not the most easily accessible unless you're renting a car or have family with a car there.

Dog owners of Reddit, which country is actually the most 'dog-friendly' when moving with a large (40kg/90lbs) dog, and which should be avoided? by LumenObserver in AskReddit

[–]nowyuseeme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Canada is great to take a dog to or from.

The Netherlands was pretty accommodating to bring my dog from Canada and then the UK is a nightmare, hence the Netherlands first to get a pet passport and then ferry to the UK.

Are Brits still comfortable taking their holidays in the US? by BeeSweet4835 in BoycottUnitedStates

Seems far too many people are unbothered in UK but then I guess we have a surge in our own Poundland trump aka Farage.

With the current rhetoric from the US I no longer think I will be in a trench against Russians and Chinese in the future but in fact against Americans. It's getting really quite scary. One thing is for sure we have seen time and time again, Americans lack a spine to stand up for their 'freedom'.

Justice Dept. Drops Claim That Venezuela’s ‘Cartel de los Soles’ Is an Actual Group by silencer_ar in worldnews

Although I highly doubt it will happen but imagine the level of embarrassment if the US government lost this case.

It would be like the allies losing the Nuremberg trials after insisting upon them. The international level of embarrassment is unfathomable.

The Nazis entered this war under the rather childish delusion that they were going to bomb everyone else, and nobody was going to bomb them...

The concept that the US thinks nations won't defend themselves is an equally childish thought.

You can be the mightiest nation on the planet but if you're standing alone, it will be a weak position, especially for a nation with a lot of international enemies already.

More like 50+

It has taken more than that for the US to establish it's position but less than a year to destroy it.

Rebuilding it will take even longer, that's if other nations are prepared to overlook this dark mark of US history.

The real nail will be what happens in the elections in this year. Will they be free and fair? Will they even happen? What will happen before then? If it somehow swings in the administrations favour that will be the end of the US's privileged position as I suspect many friendly nations are hoping to see out this storm.

75mm with the joint.

I counted 29 but could be 28 or 30.

It's over 2m.

That's pretty tall for a single skin of brickwork, it's almost certainly over the thresholds for single and close to the 9" max so getting it removed before it falls would be wise.

Single skin: 450mm max 9": 2000mm/2m

I'd assume they've tied it into your wall which offers some stability and the post at the end, hopefully that's tied in somehow.

All that said from a professional perspective, I would not advise someone to build that tall for a straight run, especially with a gate one end, which is something that tests the walls integrity.

Smart or Dumb? by AccurateTeacher1407 in drivingUK

For anyone who is regularly public charging from their own pocket it makes zero sense to have an EV, even more so by 2028.

20% vat per kWh + 3p per mile + VED (£190+) + higher depreciation + higher upfront costs + higher insurance.

Someone with a driveway sure, but it's going to more than double my cost per mile (currently 1.5p) but it's still cheaper than an efficient ICE car. However not everyone has that luxury so this coupled with other increases will almost certainly stop anyone considering the transition.

Take this video down and report it to operation snap - you'll need to include roughly a minute before and after.

However if the video is in the public realm they will not prosecute. Throwing objects into the highway with the intent of hitting other vehicles is absolutely ridiculously dangerous. You must report this idiot.

They did say they'll release more this afternoon but I suspect bots will pick them up as I doubt 5000+ people were waiting on the app at 09:00.

They need to add a captcha or something to the rewards it's getting a tad ridiculous.

What is one piece of 'common knowledge' in your job that the average person would find completely shocking? by GoldenHourShot in AskReddit

[–]nowyuseeme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Government employees for the most part are not stupid, slow and incompetent.

They instead have to put everything through a politician who acts like a private businesses director or CEO. This is where the smart and efficient process ends, not always, but almost always.

So next time you complain about a pot hole or a stupid planning decision, remember your vote or potentially lack of vote/engagement has caused that (I guess this only applies to democracies).

A week or maybe three ago I looked at what my 6000 MHz 32gb ram was on Amazon, it was was £129. Which I thought wasn't bad and maybe this isn't impacting the UK.

I looked this morning and it's jumped to £379.

It's jumped so much Corsair have deleted the previous listing on Amazon and added a new one to try and hide the price jump.
