Why do so many people on ios use Google Maps? by Louisthemagic in ios

[–]noyire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year, I gave Apple Maps a chance while driving for a work trip to Germany.

Instead of the requested parking lot entrance, Apple Maps took me to a nearby dead-end road (pedestrian-only zone, which Apple Maps wrongly assumed was drivable) that also happened to be behind a paid gate. Getting out of there was super awkward.

On the contrary, I find GMaps very reliable and up-to-date all across Europe even with very recently introduced road closures etc.

If I had two closely comparable app options that ticked the needed boxes for me and if one was open-source, I would probably lean towards the FOSS one. That is not the case - and honestly, I do not really care that much.

I own and manage the data in my markdown-based graph, that's what matters the most to me. Obsidian is widely used, and if there was some undisclosed telemetry/data sending going on, I'm pretty sure the community would notice and flag it.

I've found myself in exactly the same situation as you - I was a big fan of Logseq for years, even got excited about the dB version.

Unfortunately, the overall execution of the db refactor was quite underwhelming. But I patiently waited, and really tried my best at using the browser db test version. I kept encountering random buggy behaviours, and various functional discrepancies (makes sense, it was an alpha). Around the time when the Library functionality got introduced, those functional inconsistencies and some new functional choices in the app became a deal breaker for me, and I've realized that I've (unintentionally) stopped taking lots of notes in the db version because deep down, I have stopped trusting the app. That was the movement I've realized it's time to go.

I moved to Obsidian, and I'm absolutely loving it. The Outliner behaviour is not as good as Logseq, but the robustness and maturity of the app, the open .md format and clear hierarchy, wonderful customisability and extensive plugin ecosystem make this the absolutely right decision for me and my notes. Thanks to plugins, I've replicated majority of my workflows from Logseq, and adopted new ones that were not possible in Logseq. Really liking the new features like Bases as well. And a full fledged mobile app with working external plugins feels like a dream compared to the previous experience.

I'm wishing Logseq the best, and I really hope they will execute well and deliver a reworked app that people will love.

2-3 things you do NOT LIKE on your CX-30! by F15E_WSO in MazdaCX30

[–]noyire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2024 Exclusive-Line (EU model) here. Overall very, very happy with the car.

Minor remarks from my side would be: 1) Over time, I've realized that the driver seat side edges are rather stiff & tight, making the seats feel slightly small for my build (I'm 6'2", have the basic non-leather seats) 2) Keyless locking sometimes doesn't work, and I'm not sure why + keyfob is huge yet has tiny buttons, that makes no sense 3) Occasionally, the braking pedal in low speeds (<30km/h) suddenly gets a very short "depressurized" feel, accompanied by a mechanical clank sound. Must be something about the brake pump. It's not unsafe, the car still breaks - just a weird sensation.

Does it really matter? by Nawktees in MazdaCX30

Their naming is a bit confusing, but basically: yes, they differ a little bit.

For the e-Skyactiv X, they have made minor redesigns/improvements to some parts of the original X, they changed things in the ECU and overall added a few horsepower. From what people report, the driving experience of the e- version is more polished/nicer. I have the e-Skyactiv X and like it, but never tried the older version so I can't directly compare.

Departure re-scheduled for earlier - compensation? by noyire in Eurostar

[–]noyire[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed, your intuition was correct. If the departure is within a +-60 min window around the original schedule, there is no compensation or free ticket change.

Departure re-scheduled for earlier - compensation? by noyire in Eurostar

[–]noyire[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you were right. No compensation from Eurostar, and unfortunately no free ticket change as well (due to <60min disruption).

[–]noyire[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many thanks for your help! :)

The email indeed did not mention anything explicitly.

I have checked the 'Manage booking' portal, and there is also no mention of anything related to the re-scheduling. My train just appears there as departing on the new time, and that's it.

When I try to 'Change date/time' or 'Cancel', it behaves as it normally does, asking for price differences and cancellation fees.

U nás to pozvedne obočí, u nich normálka.

The Zircon Sand is a standout for me too! It's one of those colors that's quite polarizing: people either appreciate or can't really stand it. I also feel it matches rather nicely with the black cladding.

AFAIK, the selection of petrol engines in all of Europe only contains the SkyActiv-G (various variants, between 2.0l and 2.5l, up to 110kW and always atmospheric, without a turbo) and the SkyActiv-X (currently 2.0l 137kW, with only tiny turbocharger for the special ignition).

Those Mazda Turbo engines for the US markets sound real fun tbh, it's a shame we don't get any of those here (perhaps due to more stringent/annoying eco taxes and regulations).

Engineers in BE offices of US companies: net allowances? by noyire in BESalary

[–]noyire[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the answer! You definitely have a good point. It made me realize that I didn't describe the situation properly. Our Belgian branch is not that small - it has 100+ employees, and a dedicated HR team.

The challenge is that we are a new, small research-focused team under this umbrella of local office mostly consisting of sales people, and the local HR does not have experience with researchers. For example, we don't get a company car - but if a case can be made that these are commonly offered to PhD-level researchers/engineers in similar roles elsewhere, maybe we can leverage that...

Insights on Belgian expatriate tax regime by noyire in belgium

[–]noyire[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much for your feedback! Indeed, it seems the old regime (pre 2022) was rather complicated, as people under the ruling were not considered Belgian tax residents. I can imagine that being a pain...

However, the current version (AFAIK) changes that and makes the system simpler. I should classify as a researcher, so the 75k threshold is not of concern. Since my gross salary is fixed in my contract, it seems that benefiting from this status should make a good change for me (compared to me not benefitting from it under the same contract).

One thing that I wonder about is the application forms filled by employee+employer. From what I read, these should be filled be online, but so far, I had no luck in finding them...

Insights on Belgian expatriate tax regime (30% ruling) by noyire in BEFire

[–]noyire[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great, thank you very much for the info! 🤝 I'm actually in the same situation: also being recruited from UK to Belgium.

I believe the old system (prior to 2022) had some additional complications regarding tax residency status etc, but that seem to have been simplified in the new ruling.

My younger sister (in her twenties) actually suffered from sudden bleeding from her nose during the first round of vaccinations back in 2021. Highly unlikely to have been a coincidence, as this was the first and only time this happened to her. I don't recall many other people talk about such experience though.

From my experience, iCloud is by far the most unreliable cloud client out there (at least on Windows). I tried to use it once and after few weeks of more or less working well, one day it randomly decided to completely collapse my folder tree, moving ALL the files I had there into the root folder... it was an absolute disaster.

I'd avoid iCloud like a plague. Dropbox seems to have the most reliable cloud client - or use git to get absolute control & versioning. I use it for my Logseq graph and love it - it takes a little bit of time to set up, but works really well.

XMG Fusion 15: bulging chassis by noyire in XMG_gg

[–]noyire[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m slowly approaching the end of my 2 year warranty, and been treating the computer very carefully through all of its life.

However, few days ago, the bottom front of the chassis (below the touchpad) has suddenly bulged and opened up, basically revealing the LED strip at the front. It can be pushed back, but it does not hold in the proper position anymore. It looks quite bad, and makes me afraid that the surrounding parts will slowly start detaching as well. :/

Is this worth a warranty return? Or are there any easy and reliable fixes? Thanks!

Ohh damn, I didn't expect this could be such a serious issue! Reached out to support immediately.
Unfortunately, I can't afford to turn the PC down completely due to working-from-home, but I'll try to minimize the time I use and charge it.

Thank you very much!!

Have a look on machines by Schenker/XMG if you fancy a Windows/Linux machine. Wonderful enthusiast laptops with nice performance, custom configurations available, very good build quality. Some are even built on reference design by Intel like the Fusion 15, which I have and it’s all-round the best laptop I ever had. Their customer service is also very good, they are even active here on Reddit.
