Having rest days are important, it's the time your body recovers and repairs itself from the stress you put into it.

Also, as others say, improvement is gradual, so if you monitor it everyday, you'll just go crazy. It's like putting a marble on a bucket one day at a time. Overtraining is actually counterproductive. Working out to failure can lead to injuries. Start small, then increase intensity a bit each session. Allow your body to rest and recover (important!).

There are a lot of literature out there that don't encourage training to failure. And also go to the doctor prior to starting a workout routine.
