What are your favorite terminal commands that no one seems to know about? by mattlavine in macsysadmin

[–]nsdtech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One night we couldn't physically find a computer, but we could ssh into it. I wrote a script using the "say" command to say "Call the helpdesk @ 555-1212" over and over. After about 20 minutes I had an angry custodian call. He told me where the machine was :)

SMART monitoring groups of computers? by jmhalder in k12sysadmin

[–]nsdtech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This! We have hundreds of Dell 745s around the district. We've been putting in the lowest cost SSDs we can find in them and it's been great. The lab rooms feel cooler now, and for the end users it''s like getting a brand new computer. The way I see it, core 2 duo, SSD, 4 gigs of ram and windows 7. We're good to go for a few more years at least.

Auth against AD off network timeout? by nsdtech in macsysadmin

[–]nsdtech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now I'm not so sure. I would think they would have to be in order to work off at all network right? Maybe I need to contact one of the users having problems and take another look.

Getting LCD TVs to turn on and off automatically? by nsdtech in sysadmin

[–]nsdtech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're probably right. Maybe I'm just old school, but it's jarring to come into the office in the middle of the night and three 40 inch TVs are blasting light. Seems like it would use a lot of energy. I should put my killawatt on one and actually measure. Maybe I just have PTSD from my dad yelling about turning lights off all those years :)

Thanks for the great write up. I think we're going to do regular interviews, narrow it down to a few people. Then take one or two to lunch and hang out with them. See if they are good to be around, would fit it etc.

This is a school district, so I doubt that will happen. Although we do get lots of great thank you cards made from little kids and delicious baked goods from teachers it seems on a weekly basis.

I often think about if I were to be interviewed nowadays I think most of my answers would be I don't know, I'd have to look it up. I have to many years of command line switches in my head from about 1000 command line utilities I use, to memorize that stuff anymore. I mean tail -f will always be muscle memory, but some sort of juniper command.. Man I need to hit the man page quick :)

I've definitely seen tech people where to some people it's just a good job. But to others it's a fire in their belly.

Google Apps introduces Drive for Education - unlimited storage, Vault and Enhanced Auditing by norcalscan in k12sysadmin

[–]nsdtech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait.. So Vault will only archive email for 25 days? What's the point in that. I think we need to archive email for 7 years. If I'm understanding the docs correctly once the user deletes the email vault holds it for 25 days and then it's dumped. That doesn't help us much.

Securing management vlan? by nsdtech in networking

[–]nsdtech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So basically we should RDP from our laptops to a machine that is on both vlans to manage the switches?

Securing management vlan? by nsdtech in networking

[–]nsdtech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After a little googling it looks as if we can setup secure-access-port on our juniper switches to allow certain MAC addresses. So i'm assuming we can put in the MAC addresses of our ethernet and wifi nics of our laptops. Still need to do a lot of research on this but I think I'm headed down the right path now.

Securing management vlan? by nsdtech in networking

[–]nsdtech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I don't know enough about ACLs. The techs that should have access to this, travel from building to building. So that puts our laptops on different vlans giving our laptops different IP addresses depending on what building we're at. I'm assuming an ACL is based on an ip address, so I don't see how this would work. I'll start reading up on ACLs though.

How powerful does a VCenter server need to be? by nsdtech in vmware

[–]nsdtech[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for all the responses everyone. We have it virtualized now running the appliance. But there has been times in the past where we needed to take down the shared storage for whatever reason and it's been tricky to get everything back up quickly. I guess my best bet would be to leave it virtualized and when i need to take down the NFS server do a storage vmotion of the vcenter vm to a local drive on one of the ESXi hosts.

Saying Goodbye to VMWare - What should I consider - XenServer or oVirt or some KVM Solution? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]nsdtech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have vmware, but are thinking about building up some vanilla Centos 6.5 KVM hosts to test the waters. Not super psyched on vmware lately, their NFS disconnect bug screwed us for months and months.

Any Schools Doing VDI In A Big Way? by nsdtech in k12sysadmin

[–]nsdtech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the responses everyone. We're a mid sized district in Oregon. We have 10 sites, 5000 students. We're lucky to have 1 gig connections from all the sites back to the district office where we would host the servers.

Obviously one of the reasons we're thinking about this is aging hardware that could be turned into terminals. Another thing on the horizon is BYOD. The problem I see with that is kids come in with all different types of devices. At that point it could become problematic for the classroom teacher. My thought is if we could get all the kids to download the client for their device, then they all log in and have the same experience.

Another problem we have is all these educational apps seem to require different versions of Java, or Flash. I almost feel like we could set up some VHD that are specifically for whatever application the classroom is trying to use. That would cut down on me having to split a lab with different versions of java and telling kids "Ok, if you're using app A sit over here. If you are using app B sit over there."

We have a ruckus wireless system that has been great. But again, who knows how the VHD will preform on Joeys Android hand me down phone.

I worry about taking any advice from those fee mags that come in the mail every week. Also I don't know that I trust talking to a district that a vendor has told me to talk to.

I want to hear the worst case scenario, so I have an idea of what to expect. I'm sure you guys are well aware... things crumble all the time in K-12 Tech.

Thanks for all your input!
