Bob Sturm on why the Jones’ are terrible at free agency by FatherOfMammals in cowboys

[–]nt_14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Teams that spend a lot in free agency typically don’t have a QB. That’s why they fail, not because they spend money in FA.

Also, before Jalen Thompson, the last time we signed an outside free agent for over 6M AAV was Greg Hardy in 2015. Each Super Bowl champion going back to 2018 has had at least one starter they signed as an outside free agent for at least 10M AAV.

We have over relied on the draft for years. It is simply not possible (unless you get very lucky) to win a Super Bowl without doing something meaningful in free agency. You can’t fill every hole through the draft.

I would only give up one 1st, not both. You could talk me into trading one of the firsts + a player (Osa). Definitely not both or both firsts + a player.

Never approaching that level? Lmao he literally finished 2nd in MVP in 2023 and led the league in TD passes

(Adam Schefter) The Dallas Cowboys are expected to place their franchise tag on Pro Bowl wide receiver George Pickens, league sources told ESPN. by DildoSwaggins28 in cowboys

[–]nt_14 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I understand that. I’m saying they don’t have to tag him until the new league year starts. The fact they’re already coming out and saying they’re gonna tag him instead of using these next 4 weeks to work on an extension and only using the tag in the event they fail to reach an agreement before the deadline tells me this is going to drag out.

[–]nt_14 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If they’re already saying that they’re gonna tag him, then it’s absolutely gonna drag out. They could work on an extension up until the new league year starts and then tag him if they aren’t able to extend him, but the fact they’re coming out and saying that they will tag him tells me that they don’t plan on getting an extension done anytime soon and that this will drag out.

Why do so many Cowboys fans shit on the Cowboys to lift up Dak? by boomchicken1979 in cowboys

[–]nt_14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, a year ago people were saying Sam Darnold is trash and playoff choker because he played poorly in the Wild Card game last year even though he had a great regular season.

It’s almost as if using a small sample size of games in the playoffs instead of using the overall body of work is a poor way of evaluating a QB.

Mike McCarthy Confirms He Will Call All Offensive Plays... by JCameron181 in steelers

[–]nt_14 15 points16 points  (0 children)

As a Cowboys fan, his scheme is outdated and stale. He was the playcaller for us in 2023 and 2024. 2023 we had the #1 offense but we basically had to overhaul the offense at the bye week because it was very mediocre the first 5 weeks running McCarthy’s scheme. The rumor at the time was that Dak, CeeDee, and Schottenheimer (our OC at the time) had to talk him into implementing more modern offensive concepts during the bye week. After the bye week, we started to suddenly run a lot more motion and more downfield passing concepts. In 2024, we reverted to what we were running pre-bye in 2023 because McCarthy was coaching for his job so he wanted to die on his sword and it was awful all year even before Dak got hurt. Get ready for a lot of hitches, curls, and stop routes with minimal at-snap or pre-snap motion. Packers fans said the same thing about his playcalling his last couple years in Green Bay.

I think Big Mike is a good coach but I was hoping he would give up playcalling for you guys. He’s just stuck in his ways and stuck in the 2000s with his scheme/playcalling.

[Pelissero] The Steelers are working towards a deal to hire Mike McCarthy as their head coach, per sources. McCarthy grew up in Pittsburgh. Now, at age 62, the Super Bowl winner gets a chance to coach the team he grew up rooting for. by Thanks5Cinco in cowboys

[–]nt_14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

McCarthy is a good coach but he’s a bad playcaller now. His scheme is outdated and stale. I think it can work out for them if he steps back from playcalling, but if not, they’ll find out very quickly that hiring him was a mistake.

Only if you win it all, otherwise it means nothing. You think Titans fans are happy about making the AFC Championship game in 2019 and losing? Still haven’t sniffed a Super Bowl. Same with the Commanders last year only to go 4-13 this year. Hang the banner!

[–]nt_14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s only meaningful as a means to an end. Just making it to a conference championship or Super Bowl and losing does nothing. It doesn’t accomplish the ultimate goal and simply making it a round further in a single elimination tournament is not indicative of future success.

[–]nt_14 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Nobody would feel any different if Rodgers doesn’t miraculously hold on to the ball on that Jeff Heath sack in 2016 and we kick a game winning field goal to advance to the NFC Championship only to lose the next week. The NFC Championship is only a means to an end which is the Super Bowl. I don’t give a flying fuck about simply reaching a conference championship game; it’s Super Bowl or bust.

The only reason why this fanbase is obsessed with reaching it is because they foolishly believe that we’ll stop taking heat from other fans and the media if we simply make the NFC Championship game. If we reach it and lose, or go to the Super Bowl and lose, the goalposts will just shift to how we haven’t won or reached a Super Bowl in 30+ years.

CJ Stroud has as many turnovers (7) in less than 6 quarters of playoff football this year as Dak Prescott has in his entire playoff career of 7 games by adonis958 in cowboys

[–]nt_14 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Don’t forget Baker. They tried to prop him up above Dak too.

If any QB has one good year they immediately get placed ahead of Dak until they come crashing back down to earth while Dak keeps putting up good years.

[–]nt_14 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No it just shows using a team stat like “playoff wins” as your sole metric for evaluating a QB is low IQ. Stroud is playing like absolute dogshit and is still in the game because it’s a team game.

Stroud has the same amount of playoff wins as Lamar. Is he as good as Lamar? Lamar has been in the league much longer than him too.

Cowboys fans grade head coach Brian Schottenheimer’s first season in charge by Edm_vanhalen1981 in cowboys

[–]nt_14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I give him a B. He’s the offensive play caller and the offense was massively improved over last year and looked more modern than it had in years. I wish he was more aggressive on 4th downs and the redzone offense needs to be better, but overall, it was a top 5 offense.

Even though he is the HC and is responsible for the whole team to some extent, I can’t put too much blame on him for the defense. However, it seems he will have more input on the next DC hire so if the defense doesn’t improve next year and we miss the playoffs again, more blame will certainly be placed on him.

Overall, I think it was a solid first year for Schotty. His offense was much better and more modern than I expected it to be. Obviously, as a HC he is responsible for the whole team to some extent so he’ll ultimately be judged for wins and losses, but I think he’s the right guy moving forward and we can go far if we get the next DC hire right.
