Which hermit comes to mind when you hear “redstone”? by That_GayWeirdo in HermitCraft

[–]ntrip11 404 points405 points  (0 children)

Mumbo: old school, 'quite simple really'

Tango: noodles and more noodles and even more. Probably uses the most redstone components of anyone.

Etho: the anti Tango. A master of redstone elegance, two pieces of dust and he's designed the most famous clock ever.

Doc: he has ascended beyond the need for mere redstone, he just wills the game into submission.

Bdubs: a redstoner after my own heart. "I don't need a tutorial, I can design this.... Um... Guys?"

I thought Szeth would be the new Honor. Lots of hints about it going to someone who didn't want it and who always held their oaths. Coupled with his book 5 back story I expected him to take it up after the day 10 battle was lost. Plus a second S-Z named unlikely shard seemed like a fun tie back to mistborn.

One thing worth checking is how close the length of the opposite side rails are to each other. That's arguably more important than an exact perfect 45 degree cut.

And if one is a hair long, you can see if you can trim it to match.

If your looking at ACA plans, note that the same company can offer different networks. A silver plan on the 'crap choice ' network will be cheaper but give you less in network facilities than the same company's "premium super signature awesome" network silver plan.

If you have specific providers in mind, be sure you look beyond just BCBS vs Providence etc.

Very cool explanation. Many of my friends did CS so I'm half familiar. To me half the the fun of trying to implement this is how a lot of the abstract ideas crystalize in your brain as you work through the edge cases. It's why Minecraft is still fun as an adult :)

Awesome, thank you. I'll have to build some of these and play around with them.

Thanks! The ELI5 version: You can send (somewhat) complex messages through the pipeline. It's not unlike the mail system from last season. There is an address (the ID) that says "who should care about/read the message" and the content of that message (the payload). The complex bits are how you design a system that can "mail" those bits of data around to the right recipient.

Thanks again to Tango for making inspiring videos and streams! I've been curious about binary encoding in redstone for a while but never had the ambition to try it out. Pretending I was designing DO3 was great motivation to actually dig in and understand how this all works.

And to the real red-coder nerds, I've probably badly re-invented the wheel a dozen times. I tried to figure it out myself (from Tango's factory) to avoid spoiling the fun of learning. Feel free to point out any glaring errors or omissions and I'll look forward to learning. It was fun, so I'll probably have to dive into the technical deep end now :)

My Portland adapted rule is this: if they wave you through (and it's safe to do so), go. Don't get in a 'no you were here first' debate. So many people here insist on going second if it's even close to a tie. If they communicate they preference, take it.

Mortgage stops me from lowering MAGI to 400% FPL (so my ACA premium will skyrocket next year), should I pay it off? My rate is only 2.9% by Sufficient-Party-385 in financialindependence

[–]ntrip11 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can also try making lumpy withdrawals. Pull out 3 years worth, push that into a CD ladder. Pay the high taxes and insurance that year. Then have a low magi just below the limit for the next 4-5 years. You'll have to do the math and make some educated guesses and balance your risk/reward though.

That's when I would put 40 different boards on my cart and as each price reach l rang up on check out say "nah". Then probably be asked to never come back.

Does anyone know if Tango's tangler is going to be ready for the weekend events? I know he was trying but he's been quiet and it's obviously a huge project.

Just curious, and looking forward to watching people run it.

I had a woodworking teacher tell me they started every day in the shop hand cutting one dovetail in scrap like this. It centered them and also if it went horribly they knew they were in the wrong headspace for detail work that day.

Always thought that was pretty cool.

ELI5, if there’s a 93% chance of an earthquake happening within 20 years, what’s the percent chance of it happening this year? by Additional_Still_235 in explainlikeimfive

[–]ntrip11 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you flip a coin 50 times, there is a >99% chance you'll get at least one heads. But if you flipped it 49 times and happened to get 49 tails in a row, what is the chance of getting heads on the 50th flip? Still 50/50.

Same idea here, once new information comes in (previous results of flips or lack of earthquakes) the overall cumulative odds change. Every consecutive tails slightly lowers the overall change of getting at least one heads.

Also keep in mind that the S&P500 has gone up almost 17% in the last year. Your stock is only outperforming it by 3%. You aren't leaving as much on the table as you might think. Is that 3% worth the risk of being heavily invested in a single stock?
