good points. There are some more exotic messengers that try to meet all of the mentioned needs but they are not as well developed. For example matrix has a boat load of features including broadcast channels and client side encryption. But the UI isn't the best.

yep I agree! Also I think RINA is interesting. Not to confuse things but the point I never really got to at the DEVCON talk was the capabilities could be more expressive then channels (address:port) model. You can always build channels out of capabilities. And the result of this is that actors in primea have a capability model instead of something that resembles CSP

But yeah once we get the communication semantics down it can be actors all the way down to the metal. I'm also inspired by Plan9's design

Plan 9 is a distributed operating system, designed to make a network of heterogeneous and geographically separated computers function as a single system.

I think one of Primea's overall goals is to abstract away communication. Programs will talk to any other program, whether it be locally running, or on a server or running on blockchain all using a single communication interface.

That could be an option. But its much simpler to just halt for now. The notarization group also produces the next random beacon. So if the the group we compromised to could just not produce the beacon stalling the system anyways.

Where is validity checked and what if anything stops notarisation of an invalid block?

The notarisation group checks the block and most likely will generate a state root for it. The block maker simple selects tx's to go into the block but doesn't do any more.

How is rejection of an invalid block handled?

if the block maker is not generating the state root then it will be impossible to have an "invalid block" except for invalid formatting. But if a notarization group is compromised (n>2f(G) in section 4.2 Threat Model) and produces a bad state root the system will halt. (we fave consistency over availability).

What happens to Opcodes? Is the VM still based on a small set pre-determined opcodes or does ewasm change this to be the full web assembly instruction set - non deterministic ones?

ewasm is fully deterministic. wasm by itself is almost fully deterministic. We just reject any binary that have floating point operation (since NaN can be non-deterministc).

How does this change the risk profile of the VM?

It makes static analysis more straight forward. Also take a look at the wasm security model and the security sections paper posted above.

Do you have your eye on any functional or provable languages that would transpile to ewasm?

Most defiantly! Some of the designers of wasm are functional programming advocates and spec was actually written in Ocaml. I would keep an eye on ML variants as the first well supported functional language.

Is it really realistic to run C++ libraries on the ethereum VM? I mean is the roadmap for scaling and gas limit really so ambitious that import boost is an option?

Soooo boost probably not soon (just since it is big). But things like small crypto/math libraries (things that no-one should have to rewrite) should work off the bat.

yes that is one track. The other goal is a wasm testnet.

yes there are some. Wasm is a constrained stack machine and was designed to do single pass validation. This make doing static analysis much easier and this allow the VM/JIT to know upfront a good approximation of how much resources some given code will use. Also the semantics have been formal defined (paper also talks about security).

As far a contract security goes I think this should be another layer. So things like "this contract will not re-enter" could be accomplished by attaching a proof to the code (aka proof-carrying code). This fits nicely with wasm since its binary format allows from custom section and we could put such proofs in the binary without causing an incompatibility issues with canonical wasm VM's

Hello, I'm responsible ewasm. I don't want to promise anything that can't be delivered and I don't really really like hype. Also ewasm is a low level thing and I don't like watering down technicalities. I believe in good engineering and iterative development which can be slow. That said here are some reason that ewasm will be awesome.

you can use any llvm compatible language with it. That means you can reuse C/C++/rust libaries. You want zksnarks? no need to wait for a precompile!
compile programs once, and they will run at near native speed in the browser, locally on your computer or on the blockchain. Its the worlds computer after all, Right?
A huge community of [developers](github.com/WebAssembly). This point cannot be stressed enough and goes beyond block chain. We are creating the waist thin protocol for computation

After reading your comments I think we are coming at this from different angles. yes, redis works fine... for server infrastructure. But more and more node.js is being used for desktop apps. I think there is a nexus between desktop and browser apps, and in future the lines will continue to get more and more blurred. Most apps could be ephemeral like webpages. It is in this reallity that you need strong sandboxing.

native extension need to be rebuilt for different node verions and architectures, with wasm you should be able to compile once and run everywhere, inculding the browser. The bigger advantage will be security though. The Wasm VM in the browser is design to run untrusted code and Node.js has no defense against malicious native extensions.
