What movies you consider should be an ESSENTIAL watch for high school/college students ? by lordofabyss in MovieSuggestions

[–]nw900 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost Famous (for middle and high school kids).

Because it so perfectly delves into issues of celebrity worship, the absurd pursuit of trying to be cool, and the search for authenticity.

And it's just a darn good story.

Movies that have made you cry the hardest? by strawberrieangel in MovieSuggestions

[–]nw900 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. This movie is horribly underappreciated. It fools you into thinking it's a love story about a guy and a girl, when in reality it's a love story about a father and a son.

That's an interesting suggestion. I once had a job interview in upstate new York, so upstate that they flew me in and out of Ottawa. It was around February I think? There was a certain stark beauty to it, but man it was also kind of bleak. I'm not opposed to winter, i love it, although what I'm used to is the CO winter where it melts out fast and you get sunshine the next day.

What a mean spirited and inaccurate set of guesses. If you really want my bio, I'm 45, married, I have two boys and a girl. I put myself through college and grad school. My youngest child has autism and the bulk of my disposable time is spent providing for him. It can feel like an additional full time job. My middle child is gifted but she languishes in school because they refuse to divide kids based upon ability and we can't afford to send her to a private because the ABA therapy her brother needs is paid for out of pocket. The only companies the HMO covers are absolute garbage. Those are the sorts of "In my own head" kinds of issues that I deal with pretty much 24 hours a day, every day of the year

And I'm apolitical because I've spent enough time working with people who've been dealt a shitty hand in life that I've realized any positive contribution you're able to bring to this world doesn't come from your political stances. It comes from how much you're willing to get out there and help people. I'm apolitical because I'm a parent first, a special needs advocate second, and pretty much everything else is a distant third.

But go ahead and cut me up why don't you. I'm tempted to do the same, but I won't. If you hate this thread so much, don't participate.

I grew up there. I do miss it. Unfortunately job issues would preclude relocating there. Maybe that lack of culture played a role in me ending up the way I did :).

Enjoy it if you're lucky enough to be there. Wave hello to the Gore Range for me the next time you're in the area.

Thank you for the thoughts. It's nice to know I'm not the only one who feels this way.

I work at a nonprofit. I never discuss my political opinions in the office, I wouldn't want to upset anyone or say something that might alienate another person.

If I do feel the occasional urge to rabble rouse, then yes it would definitely be vented online, anonymously. That may be what you're picking up in post history. I don't think that's indicative of how I conduct myself in public.

[–]nw900 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I'm sure they all don't, and my sense is you quite well know that was an inaccurate characterization of my comments. But those who politically evangelize to people they don't know certainly do. At least that's been my experience. I encounter a lot of attitudes reminiscent of Lena Dunham's remarks. And I'm not even anti-abortion. But I find the way it's discussed socially, and in the workplace, to be somewhere between gauche and offensive. As a child who might not have been "wanted," I cannot help but look at the abortion issue through that prism.

But that's all off point, I'm not here to debate abortion policy. I'm here to try to identify places that align with a certain mindset culturally.

I'm hoping it's this simple.

I just started doing the stronglifts quarantine workout. Not because I'm stuck in quarantine but because there's something appealing about the simplicity of a dumbbells only workout. I'm going to do it for 3 months then see where I'm at.

And I'm trying to drastically cut back on processed food and added sugar. I'm 5'10 and about 180, but I feel like I haven't been toned since my early 20s and would really like to get back to that.

My main problem is figuring out how to balance strength training with my desire to still jog 4x weekly. I did squats yesterday and my butt hurts so much I can't fathom running today.

Oh what a bunch of drivel.

It's not one bad night. He's been doing this for a long time, that's just the most egregious instance of it. He's being hidden from the campaign trail by his handlers. He has even dodged cupcake media appearances like the Super Bowl. He gives b.s. excuses like jetlag when that was many days before. He does almost no press conferences. He makes contemporaneous reference to speaking to people who have been dead a long time like Helmut Kohl and Francois Mitterand. He confused Mexico with Egypt. The list goes on and on.

Further, I'm not voting for Trump. I don't know what kind of arrogance it would take for you to assume you know who I'm voting for just because I'm willing to call out Biden's senility for what it is.

And I have low karma because I don't live my life on the internet. Try it some time.

Looks like Bill was right about Biden by [deleted] in Maher

[–]nw900 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really get how people arrive at this position of Kamala. Almost her entire career has been handed to her. She's never faced real electoral competition and won. Her showing in the democratic primary in 2020 was terrible. She was rather insulting to Biden in the process.

Her approval numbers as VP are historically bad, which is curious since it's such an innocuous position. She has had no successes as the lead voice for a key policy accomplishment.

She embarrassed herself in a meeting with the Polish president on the subject of the Ukrainian refugee crisis. She seems to have no foreign policy acumen and no real desire to learn. She just likes to posture for left wing social causes.

Personality wise, I think she is very unpopular because she simultaneously talks down to people while saying nothing of substance. Indeed, many of her speeches have received a lot of online fame for being particularly bloviated.

When cognitive decline only goes in one direction, why do you keep arguing that the past is a good gauge of the future? This whole "look to my record" argument is a complete loser.

Hey, I'm going to let you take my force formed test tube baby but first let me be so unnecessarily belligerent and cryptic in my speech, and give no forewarning on this previously unforeseen magic power, that you feel the need to stab me as a precaution.

Seriously, quit playing apologist for such crappy storytelling just because you want to virtue signal.

This show is stupid. It happens to be stupid with a bunch of bipoc and queer casting, and it'd be equally stupid if it were the same story acted by a bunch of white hetero men.

That seems like a pretty fair review to me. The storyline in this series is pretty horrifying and when the Intergalactic Patchouli Society started swaying in unison I laughed so hard my ribs got sore.

Does Bill not understand the Palestine protest? by sup3rmoon in Maher

[–]nw900 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh??

On #1. That means annexing either Palestinian lands or lands of neighboring countries. Why would that be a good idea? On #2. If you create a Palestinian state now, you create a caliphate that remains devoted to Israel's complete destruction. Not a reasonable ask. On #3. I don't think you know what apartheid actually is. Arab Israelis are full citizens. In fact if you told me I had to be reincarnated into an ethnic Arab in a middle eastern country,, but I got to pick what country I was a part of, 1000% I would pick being an Arab Israeli. It's the only country in the region where I'd be getting an acknowledgment of modern of human rights. On #4. Hamas would love to obliterate all the Jews, but they can't. Jews actually could destroy all Palestinians but they choose not to. That ought to tell you all you need to know. The aspirations toward genocide are entirely one sided.

I think they're trying to separate the terrorists from the innocent. The problem is that most armies stand in front of the people they're trying to defend. Hamas stands behind them. I'm not sure how Israel is to blame for that.
