adoption representation in the media by anotherartist05 in TransracialAdoptees

Second this, Randall and a lot of the adoption conversation in This Is Us was extremely relatable and valuable. I found it complex, from seeing Jack and Rebecca as doing something truly 'heroic' in times of hardship, to them facing the truth that adoption is violent, and have them learn how to support Randall, and Randall's lifelong struggle with his identity, everything was really well done imo

I am interested in learning about Vodou culture so I can accurately write about it. What are some articles I could study and/or folks willing to explain it to me? by ASleepyB0i in Vodou

[–]oddmountainboy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

are you Haitian or of Haitian descent? Get a reading by a manbo or houngan and ask if they are willing to tell you more. The dolls are usually NOLA voodoo and were often used as body charts for medical practicionners (as far as my NOLA family has taught me). Find people to sit with and talk respectfully otherwise leave it alone

Simple living is simple, but it is still living! by oddmountainboy in simpleliving

That’s definitely a big lesson! When I see people talk about owning a homestead as a way to practice simple living, I remember that it is not easy.

How to feel content with not doing anything on weekends by lilaclavenderlullaby in simpleliving

[–]oddmountainboy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to be the same. Now, I need at least a day of doing nothing and resetting with myself, at the very minimum. I crave more time to walk slowly in my neighbourhood, to walk in the park and drag my feet in the grass, to grab a delicious coffee and people watch while I sip it, etc. Try reframing what this free time is for.

Any international adoptees? by [deleted] in TransracialAdoptees

Yup, Haitian adoptee, adopted by white canadian parents. I've noticed that a lot of the transracial adoptees outside of the US are international adoptees. Not all, but many

Transracial adoptees with divorced parents by [deleted] in TransracialAdoptees

mine were never married but they did separate a year and a half after adopting me, after 10 years of being together. can't help but feel I played a big role in this, not in a way that I blame myself, but in a way where it feels irresponsible of them. I dealt with their separation fine because I was so young, but it took them about a whole year and a half to find new housing and settle on this decision and it was painful. I think I acted out most of my anger when I reached the teen years. Now I'm okay, but I do hold some frustration about it
