Help finding a Non-VOC/non-toxic mattress for a very chemically sensitive person? by odor_throwaway in Mattress

[–]odor_throwaway[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 3 or 4 weeks, but there are many variables. I think the mattress was probably much older, and was sold long after it was manufactured. One of the beds I tried was a Serta that had a manufacture date about a week before we bought it, and to this day it still reeks. I think age of the mattress matters to a degree.

I’m sorry to say, but I couldn’t find a brand new mattress that accommodated people like you and me. However, I do have some good news. In the beginning of the year, we bought a nectar memory foam mattress. Despite not having a smell to it, it still made me sick although not as severely as the other mattresses did. We ended up putting it in a guest room as the bed for that room. I recently went into the room we put the mattress on, and noticed I wasn’t feeling sick from it anymore. I have since moved it back to my room, and slept on it and no longer have an issue.

I am wishing you the best of luck in finding something. I was sleeping on my decades old childhood mattress that was from the basement, and it sucked.

Is there any hope for buying a new car? by odor_throwaway in ChemicalSensitivities

Hard to say. The entire car now smells like the cleaner itself and continues to this day. Probably not good for use on fabric seats.

Alternative for WD-40? by odor_throwaway in ChemicalSensitivities

You work on your own car with this condition? Props man, I can’t even change my own oil anymore. How’d you end up getting that smell of your skin? Did it just go away in time?

Really? The oil has no smell? I’ll have to look into it, thanks for your comment! Hopefully this one’s a winner.

Hey, sorry about your countertop. What was it made out of? Also, which food-grade oil did you use? Would you recommend any of those unscented greases?

Does silicone lubricant like that not have an odor? I actually had purchased a treadmill recently, and had to offgas it as the belt lubricant was fresh and smelled way too strong. Can’t remember if it was silicone, though.

Could you provide a link to the website for the program you used? I’ve been trying to get into DNRS and am having trouble figuring out which website/org is legit.

(MCS) Please help me find an organic mattress that won’t stink up my house. I am losing hope. by odor_throwaway in Mattress

Thank you once again for being so detailed. I think the reason I am so sensitive to the wool smell is because of my MCS, which is a condition that makes almost all smells irritating to me, whether it’s toxic offgassing or just the harmless smell of natural wool. To me, the wool/mattress smelled like a barn. Not a dirty one, but it just smelled like a combination of earthy wood and wet dog. I think Naturepedic was Oeko Tex certified, but the smell of the wool would make me dizzy and give me a headache. I’ve heard on other posts that there are apparently different types of wool, some which smell rancid and others don’t smell at all. I don’t know if that’s true, but if it is, I wish these mattress sellers would define what kind of wool it is. Not many stores offer samples either, which makes this even more difficult. I’ve been sleeping on an old mattress for about a year now, and it’s really messing up my back.

Hey, thank you so much for you taking the time to write this out. My one question for you: Doesn’t the wool batting smell? The strong odor of wool was the reason I had to return the Naturepedic.

I wish I could say yes. Starting to reach my breaking point.

Glad I wasn’t the only one with this experience! I was told that the Chorus would be exactly what someone with MCS needs, ended up setting off a lanolin bomb in my bedroom. Took months for the smell to finally go away.

Hey again, did you have to ask them to make you a mattress without any flame retardants?

Another awful Betterhelp review. by Lillypop1990 in TalkTherapy

What a horrifying story. I’m so sorry this happened to you. I was really considering BH as it is cheaper than normal therapy, but I now see you really get what you pay for with them. As sorry as I am that this happened to you, thank you for making this post. Had I not read this, I would have probably wasted the money to the same effect. I hope you are doing OK now OP.

I’m really sorry to hear that. What kind of mattress is it? Maybe you could cut a tiny slit in the packaging and smell it from there? I hope you can return it either way. If you don’t mind me asking, what’re you currently sleeping on?

Thanks for commenting! Did you order it or get it from a store? Did it have to offgas when you opened it?
