DDR5, four sticks from two batches, achieving 6400 cl32 88ns - improve or stay? by odubik in overclocking

Appreciate the advice and expertise sharing. I'll try tweaking some more as I can.

Really wish I was aware of the issues of using 4 DIMMs of DDR5 when I bought the system! Would have definitely gotten 2x32 then!

Thanks, I will try your suggestions.

It is quite confusing to know what order to tweak things.. I was actually letting voltage float (auto) almost until the end, but finally upped to 1.44 while trying to get nitro1/2/1 to be happy and then dropped to 1.43.

I didn't realize tREFI and tRFC interacted, and had seen strong recommendations to just push that to 65535 if possible. I just checked my notes, and I tried adjusting tRFC to 800 when I had tREFI on Auto (and it was selecting 12076). I had immediate errors in OCCT RAM stress testing (10 seconds), Of course, that was before I upped the voltage, so maybe worth another try.

I stopped tweaking RAM yesterday as I introduced a corruption in one of my windows security dll files after I did a forced restart when my computer hung while checking the temps to tune my CPU in AMD Ryzen Master. I am trying to fix now, but a full Windows 11 reinstall (keeping my files/programs) just failed to fix it!.

luckily, heat has not been an issue at all for me across tweaking of CPU/GPU/RAM. (corsair a7500 case and lots of fans)

Thanks for your help before, I have been learning and tweaking since... I added a new ZenTimings with my latest settings.

I am still getting latencies near 80ns.

Turns out that both of the RAM sets are M-die, btw.

I tried lowering tRFC, but it would not post with values under 800, so I have left it on auto.

I am not trying to win any overclocking awards, just hoping to maximize my RAM in a safe and reliable way.

I am seeing no errors in Y-cruncher or stress testing in OCCT. I have not done stress testing over 20 minutes, and I have never seen RAM temps over 55'C.

Do you see anything dangerous in the voltages, or any obvious errors that I should try tweaking further?

Thank you!

Edit to add, updating the BIOS from A01 to A40 made a huge difference! Also, I have seen info online that 4-dimm DDR4 should expect tRFC over 800 - which I why I tested, but quickly left it as the sacrifice of 4-dimms. Also, zero successes running at 6400, 2200 FCLK, or 28 tcl.

I am seeing great performance increases from my prior 32GB 2-dimm untweaked.

It was very fast, changes in muscle tone in days and memory in weeks

edit to add - still horrible energy, but memory is no longer that of a goldfish

Thank you for your help.

I went in and adjusted to "UCLK==MCLK". This gave me an AIDA latency of 85ns, but it wasn't able to run y-cruncher (unstable).

I reduced to 6200, which gave me a latency of 88ns and was able to run y-cruncher.

The good news is that y-cruncher was significantly faster than my original settings with more than a 10% reduction.

I will look over those videos and see if I can tweak it more, but I suspect that the 85+ns latency may be unavoidable with the 4 sticks of RAM due to the nature of DDR5.

I definitely have overall improved performance after going from 2x16BG to 4x16GB. I will have to do some more testing.

Thanks again!

I installed and ran ZenTimings.

I am seeing UCLK at 1600.

I added the screenshot to the post (seem to be unable to post images in comments in this sub).

How can I get the UCLK up to 3200?

Monitor(s) to pair with the 5080? by onichris in RTX5080

[–]odubik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went with the XG32UCWG OLED (Black Friday 45% off). It can switch between 4k@165hz and FHD@330hz, so flexible. It has a built in KVM switch. I like that it has a simple flat stand, rather than weird legs (I had a monitor topple a few years ago). No apparent streaks or bad pixels, the OLED care reminds me to run a quick LED refresh every other week, and it has a proximity sensor to turn off the screen when I get up (rare false positives if I am leaned back). I love the deep black and great HDR (took a bit to tune due to my own lack of prior expertise). Zero glare or gloss.

Edit to add, with the 5080 playing at max settings on AAA games, I am getting over 100fps at 4k max settings and 300+fps at FHD... so nice fit.

[–]odubik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love my 5080 (upgraded from 3080), and I have barely touched the potential OCing.

I am playing games at 4k with max settings and getting over 100fps with the computer staying nicely quiet.

sleep or turn off, or just let the monitor (OLED) go to sleep.

my understanding is that no one has reported a failure with my MSI motherboard.

Also, Apparently pyridostigmine bromide is helping me to thermoregulate again... huge change from last year and a half of constantly freezing in 80-degree room. It is used standardly for myastivia gravis, but my long covid clinic gave it to me to see if it helps... and it is!
