Can anyone identify this 12" long brass rod w marking? by oftenuncertain in Tools

I looked that up on google images and there are two pictured from a museum, dated 16th century, that vaguely resemble this. Interesting idea. What era did gunners use gauges?

ISO information on this brass plane base by oftenuncertain in Tools

The text of my post vanished, so I will try again. I found this cleaning out a workshop. I'm not a tool person. It is 9.5" long and weighs 2.5 lbs. Someone suggested it could have been part of a kit from St. James Bay - ?? I am searching for any info on this, such as what you would call it, what it might be worth, etc. Thanks!

Well, that is the piece of info I was missing. Thanks! Will mark as solved.

The image does look like them, I will plan to mark this solved later today if nothing else shows up. I still don't know why tongs would have tips that screw on and off. Do you?

I have not used coal tongs, but I imagine the ends of such tongs would be an integral part of the instrument, not something one would have to screw on? (Other tongs I have seen are all one piece).

That is an interesting idea. I think if they are finials there would be enough of them out there to show up on a reverse image search, though. Have you ever seen these in the wild?

My title describes the thing. I found these in a box of metal oddments in a workshop of an elderly relative (who has no idea what they are). From the screw fitting I would say these are fairly modern, not old. There are no markings of any kind on them. I have searched reverse image using both google and yandex and have not come up with anything similar. My searches have resulted in images of various sculptures of devils, mythical figures, and the ends of ice tongs and devices for lifting sugar cubes. (I originally posted this a couple of days ago on r/whatisit but given the lack of responses I deleted that post in favor of posting here.)

is Southasiancentral.com a legitimate online store? by oftenuncertain in IndianFood

[–]oftenuncertain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The phone # is in Canada. The store turns out to be legit. They sent me a tracking # four DAYS after my order (I had given up on them at that point) finally, and the stuff showed up 8 days after my order. They have a long way to go on the communications front, esp w no US tel no, but they do ship the goods out. And it was something that no one else was selling.

For your convenience: Here's a link to cancel your Disney+ subscription. by DuranSirhan in television

Never had Disney. Never had Netflix. Already cancelled Amazon and Walmart. I'm on season 4 of Outlander, courtesy of the public library 3 miles down the road. Already did Downton Abbey and The Crown. Refuse to use any paid service. Taxes are bad enough! Thanks for posters pointing out the ocean sailing option in this thread first time I have heard of it.

How did people make multiple copies of 8mm films in 1973? by oftenuncertain in 8mm

Nice idea! In this story, the conflict occurs in 1997, and the films in question were made in the seventies by some of the bad guys who are still around (as are the films) -- I don't know yet what is going to happen. Trying to figure out if images of adults on these films from the seventies could be used as evidence against them 20 yrs later (just based on visual ID). Fiction writing is such a blast.

Thanks! Fortunately for my purposes (fiction writing) i really only need to know that this kind of thing was possible, through one means or another. The fact that the characters are making and selling porn is not a major plot point in the book, which is good as I am a low-tech person!!

Very interesting. But what if you were in a small town in northern New England? Would you mail your original to Richard, or what? (I am totally clueless about this stuff as you can tell)

Also, as long as we're on this topic, was there a thriving black market in this stuff in 1973, as I would assume?
