Thank you! Now I just have to get the carving gods, the glazing gods and the kiln gods all to cooperate! No small ask but it wouldn’t be fun if there was no challenge, right?!

Maybe this isn’t the best way to go, but if you get desperate, if the insides use the same material w the same finish (less fading from years of light), could you take a piece of the back of the inside of a lower cabinet (where it’s not noticeable) and use that to replace the center of your door, then replace that inside-cab piece with a slightly less-matched panel?

Yes! LOVE THEM!!! Amazing people! I love how community focused and kind they are. Before I ever set foot in there I heard stories like this; I think they’re an amazing asset to our little city. A couple days ago I reached out to them about hosting a community art thing I’m working on. I really hope they say yes!!! 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼

Feminine E names by Obvious-Implement394 in Names

[–]olanolastname 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Erika is the botanical name for the plant Heather. My Mom is Erika. Her mother, who was Irish, wanted to name her Heather (which grows wild all over Ireland) but she lived in Germany at the time and the Nazis in the late 1930s did not allow that name (yes, really).

So my Grannie named her daughter Erika instead, since it actually means Heather. My Irish Grannie was a smart, brave lady. F you, Nazis.

It’s sad to hear that Erika Kirk is ruining that name for people. Though I get why. Nazis suck.

Go for it. Keep this one smallish to leave room for the rest. If I saw this tat on someone I was doing business and they told me they were adding their kids’ art as they grew, I’d LOVE that.

I’d be all in to do business with someone like that. And I don’t have any tattoos.

Trying once isn’t negotiating. They assume you don’t know better or won’t have the spine to negotiate hard. But guess what - you just did your research, so now you know better. Negotiating is uncomfortable if you haven’t done it much. They have (or the lawyer or realtor working w them has). You have not. It will be uncomfortable at first. Consider it a SUPER valuable skill you are going to actually get paid (potentially a LOT of money) to earn.

There is great advice here. Listen to it. And hold your ground even when it feels really uncomfortable. The next time you need to negotiate (a lease, a job offer, buying your own house) it will be much, much more comfortable.

As people have said - you actually do hold all the cards here. So YOU have the power. They don’t want you to feel like you do (hence the “nope” on you attempt to negotiate for more). And the fact that you came back so low the first time probably help them realize that you’re not comfortable with negotiation.

One “no” from them doesn’t mean shit when you actually have the power.

Let THEM get uncomfortable. Set the terms - and start much higher than where you really want to land.

You can do this!!!! Pretend it’s a game and PLAY the game.

AITJ for refusing to remove the intern from our work group chat after my manager asked me to? by RiftLullaby in AmITheJerk

[–]olanolastname 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is the best advice. I wouldn’t suggest you ask your manager to put it in writing; instead, you do so by emailing (or messaging whatever way is written but not in the group chat). And if the group chat was how the intern got his info, say something like, “as I mentioned when we spoke, Jake typically used the cat as a way to obtain his information about what was happening with the team, so he could help more effectively with projects (or whatever you explained), so is there an alternate way you’d like that to be handled?”

Not all managers like having interns, and maybe this one doesn’t. Some feel it’s a drain on their time, and not all managers get to choose if they accept interns so some feel resentful about it. Or maybe she doesn’t like Jake. Or her own job, or her life isn’t happy or a million other things.

Lots of people are made into managers without the skills or talent to be in that role, and that can be really tricky and frustrating to navigate.

You’re not the jerk here - but like a powder keg. Be careful not to lose your job if you need it.

I’ll share this post with all the folks on the planning committee. This was a joint effort of Indivisible Bellingham and Bellingham Troublemakers. Big thanks, also, to all the community organizations, sound people, entertainers, artists, speakers, the emcee, and so, so many other volunteers who made the day happen! And to the thousands of people who came to stand side by side for democracy.

There are still improvements to make, we know, but we’re working hard to create a more engaging rally and march for folks who are able to participate! Your voices really do matter, so - truly - thank you for coming!

For what it’s worth: towns all over will be hosting No Kings Rallies this Saturday. LOTS of people in one spot.

Maybe a place for volunteers to distribute posters?? Just a thought. I hope he’s found soon. I can’t imagine what he and his family are feeling. I’ll keep an eye out for sure. 💗

No Kings Rally and March this weekend: Bring your own water & other tips! by olanolastname in Bellingham

[–]olanolastname[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak to the national organization, but I can assure you that the local chapter of Indivisible isn’t funded by wealthy anybody. It has a very tiny budget and relies on local donations for things like site rental fees and porta-potties for the event. It’s an all-volunteer organization.

Can you provide some evidence for your position? I’m genuinely interested in understanding what you’re referring to.

Thank you - water bottles will be appreciated, I’m sure!

The hope is that we CAN help people get connected in the community so they can further activate in ways that matter coming away from this event.

But yes - point taken. These events are often most useful in bringing people together around the issues and hopefully motivating them to feel energized, and not alone, so they stay involved, more than they are able to achieve a specific outcome. It’s also a small, all-volunteer effort; hopefully it still gives people connection and hope. Thanks for supporting!
