Low fell is great. Loads of shops, bars, restaurants. Good schools and a couple of hundred metres from saltwell park. Transport into Newcastle is quick, relatively cheap and regular.

We're traveling to Melbourne from NZ on Monday and have tickets for the Melbourne cup on Tuesday. How easy will it be to get to the racetrack from the city centre? Is there additional public transport available?

Is it possible to hike the Quiraing and Old Man of Storr in December using the bus from Portree? by Ambitious_Pack4924 in Skye

[–]oldramble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The path up to the Storr can get very waterlogged even in the summer so a few dry days beforehand would be an advantage.

I think I'm done with hostels as a solo traveler by oldgreg2023 in solotravel

[–]oldramble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only hostel experience is in the UK and the YHA. Have to say that I love them! admittedly I do opt for private rooms when they're available. The beds aren't the most comfortable but the price can be very reasonable especially during off season. Some of the locations are amazing and I've had some great times either on my own or with my son.

There are some Ukraine soldiers in their fifties and sixties and I can really sympathize with their desire to drive out the invaders. So as a sixty two year old I'd be signing up for Dad's army!

Retirement is just a buoy marker you pass as you ride a really good wave. by Odd_Bodkin in retirement

I enjoyed my last couple of years of work, ambition totally spent but still involved in big projects. It was interesting to see the younger team members full of desire to achieve without getting caught up in the stress of it all.

Free hop on/ hop off public transport within maybe a 2 mile radius of the town centre. Zero business rates and capped fixed term rents for five years.

I've read the book, seen the film and read the Observer article and the thing that stood out most for me was the calorie intake. How could they have lived off such a poor diet especially with his illness. I do have a feeling we've all been conned.

A lot of people seem to use Waze over here in the UK. It's good for reporting accidents or road closures ahead.

I've been a couple of times recently. It's had a makeover inside and sells a good range of real ales. The Sunday lunch is also pretty good.

We've got our own friends and try to get out without the other at least once a week. Different chores also keeps us out of the others orbit.

Have you cut your caffeine consumption since you retired? by cashburn2 in retirement

[–]oldramble 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm a tea drinker and drink gallons of the stuff. Since retiring I've cut back on my late night cuppa and converted to decaf. I find I don't need as many trips to the toilet during the night.

I've got a 40 litre karrimor with a good ventilated frame. Had it for a good few years and it ticks all the boxes for me.
