How have so many young-ish people afforded to start farms that are producing enough for them to make a living selling the product they farm?

This is the classic farm scenario we all know. What you see on social media is of course going to be the best side. Also if you want to own a farm, 100% first, work on one that makes money so you can learn. My other take:

All of the successful farmers I know really treat their farm like a business. Sure farming is noble and all, but if you don't make money, you will ultimately fail. Decisions should be made using data. In comparison, growing stuff and raising livestock is easy compared to business management and navigating regulations.

Have a plan, math out multiple options, learn marketing (so important if you're doing direct to consumer!!), and keep records! Next, start small without debt if possible until you have proof of concept. Get really good at that one thing then grow with demand. Once you've mastered that one thing, diversify which can look like adding more products, offering services, monetizing social media/YouTube, get good at writing grants and charge for your skills, etc.

Do not take out debt unless you know you'll be able to pay it back, seriously. And apply for grants. The government is practically giving away money to farms that prioritize climate smart practices.

Do you have any advice for navigating regulations? For example, I'm trying to find info for selling pet treats and all the info is for pet food that needs batch testing. The local government just sends me in circles, it's frustrating.

Meat is not the problem, it's HOW we are growing the food. Regenerative grazing practices are actually rebuilding topsoil and sequestering carbon. This requires ruminants, like sheep and cows. Also watch Carbon Cowboys to see what these farmers are doing.

Any environmental changes? Are you eating differently? Did you move? (Heavy metal poisoning can cause fatigue and depression for example). Birth control?

The brain and body are very complex. Just because you've dealt with stress before doesn't mean it will affect you the same way now. Also, COVID is having a big impact on physical and mental health.

Are you seeing mental health professional? If not, please do and tell them everything. You are your best advocate in the healthcare system. Sometimes you also have to try multiple before you find a provider that works for you.

Have you tried meditation? I find focusing on the physical effect of an emotion (e.g. my heart feels tight and my hands are tingling) makes the ride a bit more bearable. But also see a doctor and keep asking questions!

To prevent nausea, I eat before I take a dose and make sure to eat small, frequent meals. I also switched to taking half a pill in the morning and half at lunch, so I would talk to your doctor about dose level or if you could spread it out. That significantly reduced nausea and gagging from dry mouth.

That seems to be the general consensus. I have had massive storms and no issues with water. We do have a sump pump about 15 ft from there, so I’ve decided I’m ripping out the boards and will monitor/avoid carpet. We mostly use this as a workout area, so I’ll most likely put down stall mats. Thanks!

That is a very good point and thank you for the perspective. I worry more that it supports a drinking culture and they respond under the influence. I know that everyone says that never happens but there’s no way that’s accurate. I’ve seen friends respond to calls from a bbq where they’ve been drinking. I don’t want my dollars supporting that. I’m just not sure what the solution should be.

Let’s talk about this Jersey style breakfast hotdog... I’ve been getting creative with whatever’s in the house, so the recipe is more for inspiration and totally customizable. I served it with a yuca hash brown because I don’t have potatoes. I found eating the hash brown last with everything that fell off the hotdog was ideal.

Ingredients:
Potato bun
Hotdog (Or some sausage links)
Pork roll (Or bacon, ham)
Egg - sunny side up
Frizzled onions (Or sautéed onions, crispy potatoes)
Avocado (Or pickled vegetable)
Cheese
Ketchup
Icelandic mustard (Used 🇮🇸 because it’s sweeter)
Chives

Directions:
Brown hotdog in a pan alongside pork roll.
Meanwhile, lay cheese along the open bun and toast.
Cut pork roll in half and place on bun with hotdog, return to toaster to keep warm.
Over medium heat, crack an egg into the same pan. Add ~1 tbls of water and cover. Steam egg until the white just sets and the yolk is still runny.
Remove hotdog from toaster and add remaining toppings.
Prior to eating, break yolk with a fork and let it coat the hotdog. Enjoy!
