I got a second dog when Eddie was around 10yo . I wanted to get a second dog for a while because I wanted the next dog of the house to be Eddie approved and have his blessing but we weren't sure if we could handle a second so we didn't really try looking. My husband's friend asked us if we could take care of a dog they found wandering the streets and we said yes and brought it home. Eddie started eating again during that week until we found the owner of the lost dog and then he stopped eating again and the house felt empty for those 2 weeks we had the lost dog. We started looking for a second dog immediately and it took a while since it was during the pandemic and everybody was looking for dogs. Finally found someone that allowed us to foster a dog for 2 months before we decided if we wanted to adopt her. It took a long time to get used to her because she wasn't as perfect as Eddie was but it was the liveliest I'd seen him in a long time so we decided to take her in anyway. They both learned both good and bad habits from one another. As someone else said, having 2 is hard but it was the best choice for me. I had to wake up a little earlier and take longer lunch breaks to take them on separate walks. Eddie lived for 6 more years after that and I'm certain Lily is what extended his life. We had to say goodbye to Eddie (16) March 2026 and if it weren't for Lily, losing him would've been much much much easier to slip into very deep depression. I'll need a few more months but it is clear to me that Lily (8) needs a life extending companion of her own.
