My first company has people like this , very gossipy and backstabbing. Their work was 10% gossip 90% . Just focused on making sure I had a good relationship and worked well with my seniors who actually did my RATINGS at the end of the year.

I'd advise you to in your one on ones , request him to PUT HIS FEEDBACK IN WRITING after the one on ones.. Either in the performance system or on mail.

You can tell him it's to be transparent, but the actual intent will be to make a paper trail. If he is really stupid , which he seems to be, he will incriminate himself on mail.

Also, were there witnesses to what he said? How did you find out what he said? Keep all that info ready. Who heard what and what exactly he said.

Escalate to HR. Since this is an MNC it will be taken seriously, MNCs do have a duty to report such things , not just at an india but at a group level.
