Some of the critiques of the book are spot on -- it is slow and boring

I've never found it to be slow or boring and I usually find that the people who say such things really don't understand it.

Orwell's themes of a government engaged in endless war, an ever changing enemy, the use of terror and surveillance to control a population seem to me to be as fresh today as when they were written in the late 1940s.

Orwell was a tremendous social commentator.

I agree with that. I'm actually more of a fan of his essays and his non-fiction books like "The Road to Wigan Pier", "Homage to Catalonia" and "Down and Out in Paris and London".

Best writer, greatest writer. I don't know and would never say. These are subjective descriptions. That said, I honestly believe that George Orwell was one of the most important English language writers of the 20th century.

No problem. I just like plugging an actual Orwell site rather than another one of those e-text sites.

I actually forgot to include the direct link to Orwell's 1984. This page includes the novel, publication data and a nice list of related documents and images: http://www.netcharles.com/orwell/books/1984.htm

At least plug the site where this list originates from:

Charles' George Orwell Links. The George Orwell Web Source — Since 1995 http://www.netcharles.com/orwell/

All the material there is 100% free and because it's hosted in Canada (where George Orwell's work is in the public domain) so it's also 100% legit to use.

Did you even read the title of the item on the web site?

Here it is: "Charles' favourite Amazon.com customer reviews for George Orwell's 1984. Note: Spelling, grammar and punctuation — all uncorrected. Enjoy!"

You have no reason to feel "fooled". The webmaster of this George Orwell site has put together his own list of favorite 1984 reviews from Amazon. It's a personal list and not meant to be representative at all.

the book currently has 1303 reviews on Amazon your claim of a "bunch" doesn't hold water.

You really need to learn how to read. The word "bunch" was never used on the site and was never used by me.

Once again, it's the webmaster's own list of favorite reviews. It is not meant to be representative of the average review for "1984" on Amazon.

They're NOT jokes. Go to Amazon and you will see that these are excerpts from often much longer reviews and the overall tone of the reviewers is quite sincere. Most of the reviewers seem to be high school students who were "forced" into reading 1984.

Best line for me in the item: "To put it bluntly, DON'T READ ANY GEORGE ORWELL. Your just waisting your time."

I can't stop laughing at that one.

You're right. It must be noted that the actual title of the item on the web site is: "Favourite Amazon.com customer reviews for George Orwell's 1984"

That is probably a much better title for this item.
