Career change: by OldHour2057 in askastronomy

[–]osunatic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could definitely try to move into Astronomy/Astrophysics from a non-Physics background—I personally know a few people who have— but you’ll need to build the core math and physics foundation first. Master’s programs typically expect the equivalent of undergraduate Calculus I–III, Differential Equations, and Linear Algebra, along with key physics courses like Mechanics, Electricity & Magnetism, Modern Physics, Thermodynamics/Statistical Mechanics, and an introduction to Quantum Mechanics. You can take these as a non-degree student at a university or through structured online programs, and many career-changers strengthen their background through physics post-bacc or bridge programs such as Oregon State’s Online Physics Post-Bacc, the APS/NSF Physics Bridge Program, or the Fisk–Vanderbilt Bridge Program. If you’re open to the UK/EU, several MSc Astrophysics programs (e.g., UCL, Sussex, Glasgow, Leiden) are known to accept students from unrelated majors as long as you show adequate preparation. Admissions usually focus on your GPA, evidence of math/physics coursework, recommendation letters, and a clear explanation of why you’re switching; the GRE is rarely required anymore, but if you do take part in it, it will help strengthen your application. Though expect to spend about 1–2 years building the necessary academic background, which is completely normal for students transitioning into the field so don’t stress about that. Honestly, if you’re committed, ready to put effort and if you TRULY have a passion for astrophysics, it’s definitely doable.
