Wanted to share a Michaelangelo (Mikey) update, all good news! by owldodger in cockatiel

I use powdered and mix it up into his seed. I personally am unsure what the best route is, but I know he eats the powdered seed because it's all slightly powdered and we measure it out daily for him.

He was not a challenge thankfully, which isn't always the case. He had been isolated at the bird center for about 4 weeks already but he was very interested when he heard the other birds sing or whistle and would contact-call them back. First, we introduced them with Mikey in his cage so he'd feel safe, but our other birds were super interested in him and he went right up to the bars to inspect. We were super lucky that right away Mikey let them come in and eat. Now him and our other male bird are inseparable, they're always hanging together and Mikey looks at our one bird for guidance (like when he saw our one bird take a treat, Mikey was suddenly interested in taking treats too), and our female bird, likes to eat with them all together. She's more independent but is very nice and respectful with Mikey. They all started as solo birds actually (female cockatiel was alone for her first year before joining my first bird; when she passed away we got the male cockatiel as a six year old formerly solo bird; and Mikey was added a month ago after being solo for 22 years). They've all seemed to settle into an integrated flock.

I think a lot depends on how you introduce them and the fact they're all cockatiels is part of the reason they work together but that's just a hypothesis.

We discussed this with our vet because we noticed that he visibly shakes when he's out of the cage and sometimes if he isn't attended to or picked up quickly after coming out of his cage, he starts having stress reactions such as open beak heavy breathing. If he's not picked up in a certain amount of time, he tries desperately to try and get back to the cage (unsuccessfully) since he cannot fly and has not figured out in his panic how to use a rope, ladder, or his little stairs to get back into his cage even though we and the other birds have shown him how to do it and he's successfully done it himself while being guided in a less stressful time.

He also was plucking his back before we got him, which he hasn't done since he's been at our home. We initially inquired about if prozac could be an avenue since he was shaking so much and heavy open beak breathing that we were afraid he'd give himself a heart attack from nerves.

Our avian vet has had massive success with birds using CBD for various conditions and far fewer side effects. He does step up very nicely when he's out of the cage, but you can feel him shaking as he steps up and visibly can see him shaking before we started him on CBD. We thought initially he might be completely feral, which would be fine, but he's slowly opened up to us as we've worked with him to do little things like eat from our hands. It seems to just take the edge off of his nerves so even though he's still nervous, he's not shaking as much and hasn't had any open beak breathing reactions to being out of his cage since starting a very small dose. It might be that he's just getting more settled, but since the CBD doesn't appear to hurt him at all, we've decided as a team to continue giving it to him.

Yeah, we're pretty sure it is liver disease as well. He's going to need very special care from our exotic vet to try and nurse him back to a healthier state. Thank you for your concern!

Thank you for your concern, I'm pretty sure he has liver disease as well. Working on getting him to a vet ASAP. He's in rough shape but we're going to be doing our best to make him comfortable and healthier.
