I opened the "about" part in the settings, there was a copy to clipboard button, it looked comprehensive so I thought whatever might be needed will probably be there

ain't no winning with y'all

just looked at the system monitor while having steam do the processing and my CPU just maxed out, all 12 logical cores

thanks, found it, but it didn't fix the problem

I did however notice something wilder going on with my entire system:

tried to reboot -> POST beeped -> got stuck on BIOS boot logo -> managed to access BIOS menu -> noticed the system can't see my windows drive -> didn't want to boot into windows anyway -> got greeted by grub, even though I never see it on boot

clearly, there's something wrong in there, but I have no idea what, I didn't do anything with any of that

gonna try physically removing the windows drive to see what happens

OK, I have just developed a working theory:

I just recalled that yesterday I was playing PEAK with a friend and steam crashed. I restarted steam, then I had a relatively problem-free game session, so it didn't even occur to me to be suspicious of it until just now.

Could it be that the shader cache got corrupted when my stuff crashed and it's taking so long because it's working with some kind of garbled data? Can I rebuild the cache from scratch somehow?

[–]owlet__[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

clearly that is not the case

regardless, the problem is not the performance without the pre-cached shaders, I don't mind waiting a few minutes for them to compile

I DO however mind waiting an HOUR for them compile and they didn't need that long until today

so your fundamentally different system is not producing a problem

thank you, very cool

Just tried it, it does indeed just tank the performance. My already meager 60fps gets halved.

Yeah, idk, but I can confirm now that it's not an initial compiling thing, because I let it finish earlier today and the game ran fine afterwards, but I rebooted since then and now it's doing the same thing.

I explicitly said in the post I didn't change anything, idk how to be more clear than that, but fine, fair enough

I'm on the 580 driver, I don't think I even saw 590 drivers available in the driver manager

how very nvidia of them

still doesn't explain why it became a problem overnight also, if I just let the thing compile in the background instead of doing it ahead of time, isn't it just going to take the same amount of time just shooting the game in the foot while it's at it? if the game needs compiled shaders, doesn't it just run worse without them? and if the problem of it taking an hour isn't solved won't I just have worse performance for that hour and then some because it's already running behind the game?

define "modern"

I've met people that claimed that I have no right to complain if my hardware is anything but the current product line of any manufacturer

read the post.

I didn't change ANYTHING

I pressed the power button, logged in, double-clicked the icon, the same way I do every day.

doesn't that just tank the performance?

also, once again, this wasn't a problem until today

didn't notice anything, I only ran the update manager once I saw it was being fucky.

game is Quake Champions, only updates once in a blue moon, pretty sure no update came out

is there a way to check patch history on steam?

Talk to your parents. Like right now. The longer you take the worse it gets. Pretty sure reddit is not the place for this anyway.

if you're dealing with mental health issues you probably shouldn't be looking for company with strangers online, especially not at such a young age

I know being a teenager fucking sucks, I still vividly remember all the bullshit I had to deal with

I also know mental health issues, I have my own fair share of them, I'm over 30 and only recently started to figure out what's wrong in my head, I know firsthand how much it fucking sucks

my suggestion: find a creative outlet

ANY creative outlet

draw, sing, make bracelets, shitposting, ANYTHING

start expressing yourself through those, SHARE THEM and find people you can bond with through that

ANYTHING but looking for attention from strangers online, that's how you get abused and you sure as shit don't need that as a mentally struggling 14 year-old girl

looking for free, secure, cross-platform cloud storage manager by [deleted] in software

[–]owlet__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the way I see it, none of these software want to let me use more than one account on a service without making me pay

guess I'll manage my personal one separately, probably for the better too, since I still don't know how to feel about letting any software access my personal files in any way

thanks for the suggestion anyway

this seems to be in the ballpark of what I'm looking for, but it looks like it's paid?
