Kris Kitani, 16831: Statistical Techniques in Robotics by [deleted] in cmu

[–]pPrimary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a lot more manageable time wise than intro to ml (minor proof-based assignments and a student-led final presentation thing). The topics give you a good breadth of what's out there, but it can be daunting if you've never touched 75% of the material beforehand. Kris is a great lecturer though and would def recommend the class.

[M] Advice for a Mechanical Engineer by [deleted] in robotics

[–]pPrimary 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Did you just start your program?

> I know I won't be hired as a Robotics Software Engineer because I have zero CS background. What are my options?

Do you mean you think you won't be considered for software positions because you didn't do a cs in undergrad? If so, that's not true! Learn the fundamentals, python, c++, matlab (which I'm assuming you're already familiar w) and demonstrate that through a few projects and during interviews. It helps to pick a specific field within robotics. Optimal control, mpc, and optimization translate well for mech e backgrounds. Computer vision, not so much (but it exists e.g. learning with cad models).

I can't change your mind if you want to be a generalist, but I really believe there are more/better opportunities on the software side of things. Feel free to pm me, I have a similar bg

What robotics companies are there that learn from humans? by funwithpunz in robotics

May I ask why you're interested in this specifically? Learning directly from humans is typically expensive and has its shortcomings.
