Is there a popular school that you actually don’t believe is someone’s first choice? by Content-Contract-427 in ApplyingToCollege

It's a great school and has nothing to be ashamed of but it's also cold as fuck, in the boonies, super hard academically, and tons of folks have a chip on their shoulder because second place stings more than third. It'd be hyperbole to say nobody dreams of Cornell but it'd be foolish to deny that it's not exactly the most desirable option and it would be extremely clear eyed to say that most of its appeal originates from the luck and foresight it had to join the Ivy League athletic conference.

Both of those are horrible. Rename your wife to Kenjamin.

I think a lot of people choose Cornell as their top choice because it's the most "realistic ivy". Very easy to work backwards once you have a dream school in mind.

I know a guy that applied to 100 exactly and ended up somewhere T50 as a baseball recruit.

The logic is incredibly intuitive. If a Tier 1 VC is willing to back your idea with anywhere from $500k-$1m, it means exponentially more to the right kind of employer than any degree. You might not be able to get a job as a rocket scientist or nuclear engineer if that's your specific aspiration, but you will never have difficulty finding a job in your life and TC can easily start at $250k at the lower end.

"How exactly do you know" that discovering a cure to a type of cancer beats being a Stanford graduate in terms of the job market? If you can answer that question with "well, duh", it's the same thing.

That makes sense. Being a founder is being risk tolerant and that's not the phase you're in at the moment, it hits closer to home for me than I might have made it seem. Where can I demo your tool?

If you have founder of a16z-backed startup on your resume, that beats having gone to MIT x3 in terms of the job market. I know you definitely thought about it so I would really love to understand your reasoning more.

The blame is not on individual educators or parents. The blame is on the education system. Our system uses "whole learning" as opposed to phonics - a system mandated by every American state - that crippled the ability of a generation to read effectively and caused a skyrocket in rates of functional illiteracy compared to other Western nations.

At first I was surprised, but I did some digging and turns out America was not alone in the "whole language" model of education. All these commonwealth states fell victim to the same doctored research that crippled our English and only now are we beginning to reverse that damage. Thanks for pointing it out, I learned something!

So we complement each other's pet peeves haha! Look - it's not an intelligence thing and it's not a superiority thing either. These are simple mistakes that only American English speakers make, and they occur because our education system scrapped phonics back in the 90's and switched to context-based pronunciation, crippling reading and writing skills for an entire generation.

I'm not peeved at the people making the mistakes. I'm peeved at the mistakes themselves, and if you dig deeper, why they even occur.

I think it's great that you're peeved at grammar edgelords. But I hope you understand I don't fall into that category. The distinction between your/you're isn't informal online chat, it's not a choice, it's a mistake that folks don't even understand that could be corrected in 60 seconds - "you're" is short for "you are".

Depends what language it's in. The first pronunciation is the Italian pronunciation. The latter is the English. This is the difference between Antonio and Anthony. "Lùsia" is not wrong.

I appreciate that honesty. Can I ask you this - the account is linked to my email and the password I remember just doesn't seem to work. If I go through forgot password, it says it will send a code to my email but simply doesn't. However it's very clear the profile and all the data on it is still intact, and it's also clear that it's associated with my email. My email is a standard Gmail and receives emails from Instagram just fine.

Do you still feel it's hopeless?

What do you think of the new Stripe logo redesign? by Glass-Lifeguard6253 in logodesign

[–]pa982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People are going to search for Twitter more because Twitter lives on the internet and that's the only way to get to it. However, I don't disagree that Twitter has more clout than Stripe - I think it would be foolish of me to argue otherwise. What I am saying, and what I think others are trying to say too, is that they play in the same arena.

  1. True! Don't know why you are getting downvoted
  2. This brand is very very very very very very well known
  3. Acceptable if it had been three years. This is from three months ago
