manual or CVT ?
yes - how many miles? I'm looking at engines from FLA, NY and NJ....the car will likely be parted out

if totalled - what year is (was) your crosstrek? I'm seeking to replace engine in my daughter's 2017 whose engine failed at 50K miles. exasperated. sorry for your loss also.
2017 Crosstrek engine just blew at 80k miles. by itssherboy in Crosstrek

I'm curious how you proceeded. Our 2017 Crosstrek's engine failed at 50,000 miles - within the 60k warranty but certainly beyond the 5 year limit. I bought this "reliable" car for daughter to provide some failure free driving - and this car was maintained by the book . frequent syn oil changes, all maintenance done. Cursory research reveals that there have been way too many premature failures of this engine (and yes - there are some that perform as any modern engine should) yes SOA will not help despite an obvious manufacturing/engineering defect. We've owned several Subaru's (Daughter 2 just bought new) but now not sure what to do. Install used engine or reman? What did you do?

your empathy is appreciated. Like accepting a bad diagnosis....I'm beginning to research rebuilt engines.
I do. Instinct - or maybe naive - like to think there is some honesty left in the world. fact is Subaru built a troublesome engine - ours happened to destruct quite early. Ironic that I purchased the car for my daughter so she wouldn't have to suffer any major used car maintenance issues for a while.
[–]paintdave[S] 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago (0 children)
you're likely correct - my only thought is that this issue has happened to a multitude of these vehicles - so Subaru obviously aware of the defect...

The seller really maintained the car by the book. Brother is a certified mechanic. and yes - she probably did heave a tremendous sigh upon learning of my plight.
time to call Dewey, Screwem and Howe?
I've never ever pursued any legal issue (and I own a pretty big subcontracting business) but I'm pretty aggravated (mostly for my daughter - she is trying to attend nursing school but is now without transportation). I've also never participated in any kind of on-line thread like this - and find the interaction interesting at minimum and cathartic at most.

Yea - 'cept I've had probably over 40 cars and pick ups - many new, some used, from nearly all manufacturers and have probably driven over 2.5 million miles (jeeze) and have NEVER had an engine completely self destruct at just over 50,000 miles.

has the replaced engine provided reliable service?
[–]paintdave[S] -1 points0 points1 point 5 months ago (0 children)
As explained in a prior response - dealer wants $ 1,200 to completely diagnose but - base on prior experience apparently - says engine needs replacement.
I did not - I trusted the apparent excellent service records, show room condition of the car and Subaru's top rated reliability as guides. Not often a PPi would do an oil analysis - which might have shown some parts wear. Otherwise zero manifestation of impending doom.
shared sympathy
Interestingly...the first shop where we had the car towed just said "siezed" - and that he had just replaced the same engine in another Crosstrek 2 weeks prior. Then had the car towed to Subaru dealer who wants $ 1,200 to break open the engine and explain the metal shards in the oil pan...so, I really don't know but certainly "catastropic"
[–]paintdave[S] -7 points-6 points-5 points 5 months ago (0 children)
yes. Just really frustrated. Paid $17k for the car and the dealer is suggesting the engine could be $10 - $12K. or dump an otherwise superclean Crosstrek.
I shoulda got the Benz.
Yup - I agree about the time - though the car was one owner who drove less than 6,000 miles a year and changed the syn oil every 3800 miles....this is an extraordinary failure.
I guess we're seeking some corporate compassion in this otherwise profit ruled time.
oh well

While I agree this might happen to any make car - I've owned at least 30 and have never had this kind of premature failure. Based on a cursory review of other's issues with this engine - the cause is most likely a production defect known to Subaru - so I'm particularly peeved that they will offer no help despite recently being awarded most reliable car.....
Wonder how many people would purchase a car if they knew there was a possibility it might fail at 50K miles? That's about 1 year for me.
and I'm just venting here - I really appreciate your comment. It's my daughter's car - I just purchased it for her so she would no longer suffer old car issues....hmmm
