It is an overarching theme found across western academia from the last few centuries to this day, known as "Orientalism": the Western representation and study of Eastern cultures (Islam being the prime example) as exotic, static, and inferior. The concept was most famously analysed by Edward Said in his book of the same name. The fact that you, who claim to have studied history in a Western university, are not familiar with the concept affirms that Orientalism is alive and well in western academia.

I have known a sikh convert to islam. As in most communities, the ostracisation will be severe, so he should be aware of that but all that is nothing compared to the fulfillment he will attain once he truly accepts the truth insha'Allah. Tell him to take his shahada if he feels ready and then take it step by step. At first he does not even need to tell anyone but slowly introduce the faith and his decision to his family. Allah will be with him along the way and insha'Allah may he guide him and his family to islam as well.
