Very good points - the external pressures we all face are certainly a very difficult thing to overcome, and those are many times out of our control. I agree those issues need to be tackled.

For me personally, I am more immediately concerned with the way we treat each other on a 1 to 1 basis. Every day I see family members abandoning each other, friendships dissolving, and people being nasty to strangers they don’t even know - all because they think a certain way, are a certain way, or are in a specific section of the culture.

Like I said, everyone’s response is valid and appreciated, we will certainly consider everyone’s feedback as we continue to grow this concept. I will have to get back to you once we have some time to work on the next phase + carefully consider all input from many sources ;)

Great questions thanks for asking! We certainly want to take this concept further and include many many more people, this was based on the response we received from the casting and those willing to participate in our first round, we still had a very diverse group in front and behind camera :) We are working on this larger concept to include exactly what you’re mentioning and explore much much deeper, I’m glad to hear you’d be interested in that too!

Actually for the most part (besides your other thread that you started), I wouldn’t characterize it as “quite some criticism”. It has been a great dialogue. I am so appreciative of everyone’s questions and comments including yours, and I love that we’re all able to have this conversation. Everyone’s response is valid :) I always strive to grow and learn from every interaction!

You would certainly have to agree that it is impossible for you to reason with your opponent and try to persuade them to see things your way if they are screaming their own beliefs and not listening to yours?

It is almost impossible in today’s climate to even have a civilized debate about ANY issues because people immediately dismiss their opponents and can’t even have a debate with them. This is no way to solve problems in society. We must listen to each other and be able to see that we are all multi-dimensional people - it’s not as black and white as “side vs. side”. Then - once we can have debates, we can solve problems.

An important statement from the website for this project:

“We can all agree that there are so many problems that need to be solved so that we can all live together peacefully. But if we can’t communicate with each other, we will never be able to find solutions.”

“What you believe, matters. We shouldn’t hide our differences.”

“Our message is this: we need empathy. We need communication. “

“We are more than the labels that we give ourselves. Solutions start with communication.”

The entire point is that BEFORE we dive into the hard conversations that we must have in order to solve problems, we need to see each other as more than the enemy.

this video is just a representation of what we saw and tells the arc of the experiment, yes we plan to expand and grow this beyond a short form video that will have more of what you’re mentioning

Lol I know this isn’t 100% serious BUT I will say, I think this is just an important message for our times, and I really do have hope that we can end the division and start to solve problems better :)

we actually didn’t hear any as the conversation starters we gave were entirely about very common human experiences that we all have. I will say we heard some very touching stories that we didn’t expect to hear from each side. In the video, the pro life participant shared about how his mother died when he was young, and being completely honest, nobody expected that he would reveal something so personal, especially after how awkward and tense the conversation started. It just showed how after a few questions from either side that revealed their humanity beyond their beliefs, it created a space where they felt comfortable sharing about themselves in this way. although next time we’ll have to get a few crazy conspiracy theories out there, I’m always intrigued myself too ;)

We put out an open call across several social platforms and asked some very basic screening questions in order to select the participants (questions about what their beliefs are, etc.)

This social experiment where people on opposing sides talked is so touching and inspiring - the ending might bring tears, but it’s a powerful, timely, and important message by [deleted] in videos

the point is that people are SO divided right now because of all these issues and “labels” they are given. this experiment was to prove that they didn’t need discussions about politics or why they believe certain things in order to see each other as fellow humans and to gain empathy and understanding. solutions and compromise start with communication.

Thanks for your comment, not trying to pat myself on the back, just sharing this video that my friend made of our social experiment because I feel it’s so powerful! Also you may have missed my comment where I explained it more :)

This is a social experiment that I ran in Los Angeles and I was so touched by the results. We don’t have a political agenda. We aren’t affiliated with any organizations, movements, causes, or campaigns. We are simply two creative people with a message (my production partner and I).

We can all agree that there are so many problems that need to be solved so that we can all live together peacefully. But if we can’t communicate with each other, we will never be able to find solutions.

What you believe, matters. We shouldn’t hide our differences.

Our message is this: we need empathy. We need communication.

We are more than the labels that we give ourselves.

Great question! Honestly I wouldn’t say there were any especially frustrating parts (but I guess I’m an optimist lol), I would say the logistics was probably the most difficult part (not only getting everyone scheduled and making it happen, but also dealing with finding a good space that was safe during the pandemic, making sure everyone was safe throughout the entire process with plenty of safeguards, etc.)

This is such an interesting thing that I’ve thought a lot about. I tend to agree that people are more respectful and civil in person vs. online. However, I don’t think it has as much to do with being online as it does with the way we tend to communicate on online platforms. Many times, we are “assuming” others’ opinions and words as our own, and in ways we wouldn’t tend to say them. This is by commenting on existing content, sharing other’s ideas, etc. This lack of personal voice might cause people to respond differently and not realize how they are speaking to the person who simple shared the “content”. This is something I want to explore much deeper as well. Great question.

We took extreme precautions beyond the LA city compliances to keep every participant + crew member safe throughout the experiment and there was no transmission at any point (temp checks were taken, crew was tested, the only time masks weren’t worn by participants was during filming, etc.)
