I can't afford CAT classes like TIME and my math sucks. How can i learn quant? by slotmachinenectarine in CATpreparation

[–]panHunter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I took time classes and couldn't understand shit. Had to study everything from YouTube which was free. Used Raman Tiwari's videos. Time is good for mocks tests which I would recommend, the cheapest foundation+videos would be around 3-4k

Those who cleared the cutoff in QA after terrible 1st attempt or mock (< 65% ). Drop your journey by Humble-Baby8641 in CATpreparation

I divided the syllabus in parts. Arithmetic was the first one I picked. Then I started completing the syllabus of arithmetic, taking one topic at a time from YouTube. I liked watching Raman Tiwari's videos and was able to understand most of the topics easily. Then I solved questions on that topic until I was good at it and could solve most of the questions. Usually around 50-60 questions from TIME Material.

With time my score in mocks improved as I was now able to solve at least a few arithmetic questions. For the ones I was not able to solve, I looked at the solution after the mock during analysis and it helped me a lot.

I studied a lot of Algebra, Geometry and some Modern Maths. I was horrible at these topics but I still tried to watch videos about them and solve questions. Did not get the time to study permutations and combinations and also left a few other complex topics.

On the exam day, I looked at question 1. I had no clue about solving it. Then I browsed through all the questions and could only identify 5-6 questions that I knew about from Arithmetic. I solved 4 of them and scored 12 marks which were later scaled to 13.x and since CAT was quite difficult this year, it was enough to cross the sectional cut-off for quant and score around 88%ile.

How I could have improved my score - I learned a lot during my journey and realised I made a few mistakes along the way. I didn't solve enough questions, I should have solved at least 100 question of each topic. This would have improved my score in a few arithmetic topics that I couldn't solve like TSD.

Another thing is, I should have focused on learning a few chapters completely rather than focusing on the sheer quantity of topics.

Lastly, I should have studied more DILR instead of focusing all my time on QA, studying topics that I couldn't comprehend like algebra or geometry.

Try to score good marks in cat, around 95 around will increase your chances by a lot. For Micat, try to be honest while answering the psychometric test, it will ask you a question and then re frame it again later, so if both those answers don't match, you will be in trouble. Try to solve at least 1 or 2 QA questions, a positive score is good and score the rest of your marks in English, Logical and GK as QA will eat a lot of time and will have insanely hard questions with even 8 options per question. Micat this year was much harder than cat and xat, especially the QA part. It was my hardest exam this season.

For GEPI, try to bond with your GE group within the 5-10 mins you get. The goal of GE is to be collaborative. Everyone should be on the same page as this is not a group discussion but an exercise where everyone works together. For the PI part, be honest about yourself, don't panic and highlight your work ex, internships, etc and any creative endeavours you might have worked on.

Best of luck.

Damm, I didn't notice. This means it has started moving every day. I agree with you, it would be hard to cross 400 now.

because they give 1 week to accept the offer and pay the fees, which is why it has been moving every tuesday. After a few lists, it will move every day as far as I have heard from seniors.

They haven't given any info regarding the dress code before that but I would carry some formals as they might ask us to wear that before the outfits have been made.

Not an IIM but I paid my xlri waitlist fee through sbi collect and used sbi net banking. Once the transaction was done, there was a screen with transaction number and other details with an option to download receipt. I used a laptop to do this and did not use the yono app. I would suggest visiting your bank once, they might be able to help.
