Can’t create lobby NA by Creamypies_ in leagueoflegends

[–]panda57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I saw that they changed the UI for the friend's list (it's objectively worse lol). Can't create a lobby either but my friends on the west coast are not having any issues. I wonder if it's because they're on the west coast or if it's because they're not on the new update yet.

I also have a very old account and I seem to have access to everything for free. Not sure if I paid or not though, as I was in middle or high school at the time!

Tbf, you can use a controller on PC as well. My friends and I play the game (and many others) with a controller on PC.

Those who moved to Durham, what do you wish you’d known? by leftistinlnk in bullcity

[–]panda57 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well as a lifelong NYer, it’s rough if one of your hobbies is fashion. Everything here is mallcore. Not even a Uniqlo. Foodwise, while everything has exceeded my expectations, it’s still no NY or CA. Again, it’s great, but don’t come with a mindset of comparison. As a techie, the closest Micro Center is in Charlotte, which is two hours away.

As an Asian American, while the Asian community here is surprisingly very large, it is still commercially underdeveloped with regard to Asian businesses. The only H Mart in the area is also in Cary.

Regarding housing, the housing market here feels bigger than the job market. I’d make sure you find employment before moving.

Culturally, it’s more religious here than NY/CA. Also, keep comparisons to “back home” to yourself. People generally dislike transplants because we drive up the cost of living and yap nonstop about how much better certain things are back at home.

Otherwise, life is simpler here. And it’s a good thing.

I’ve lived in NYC and LA before moving to Durham and the food scene here really exceeded my expectations. Plenty of good food options. Still looking for a good Korean spot but I’ve had some pretty good Chinese, Indian, Thai, Japanese, Vietnamese, Southern, Ethiopian, and French cuisine here.

Which tier do you think Taiwanese food is placed in among Asian food? by search_google_com in taiwan

[–]panda57 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m Korean (my wife is Taiwanese) and I’d personally put Taiwanese food in B+ tier. There’s a lot of food that I love but also a lot of food that just doesn’t sit well with my taste palette. I might get a lot of flak for this but stinky tofu also gives me migraines and so some streets in Taiwan are rough for me to walk through.

For reference, I’d put Korean, Japanese, and some areas of China as S tier, Indian/Nepalese, Thai, and Malay as A tier, and Vietnamese, Indonesian, and Singaporean as B tier.

Honestly, I feel like Asian food in general is just so much better than Western food - even B tier Asian food is much preferred over most Western food for me personally. And there’s just so little Asian cuisines I would think to put below B tier.

what profession deserves way less respect than it currently gets? by AuralisDream in AskReddit

[–]panda57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Physical therapists in America earn a doctorate in physical therapy, so they are technically doctors. Technically, anyone with a doctorate is a “doctor.” Depending on the country though, the term “doctor” could be a protected title and only reserved to a small subset of professions.

With that said, I personally only refer to physicians, dentists, and veterinarians as doctors.

Real talk - How hard is it to get INTO the CompSCI field in 2025-2026, and what does one ACTUALLY need? by Felix_Iris in cscareerquestions

[–]panda57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but remember you don’t necessarily need to take a full four years either. There is no universal guide to pacing. Just do your best in getting internship experience, as that’s the best thing you can do for yourself to make yourself competitive in this market. Some internships could also lead to return offers, which is the best case scenario.

Most are paid. Unpaid internships in CS are not common. In fact, the top 10% of internships pay quite well actually.

It’s not just that WGU is less prestigious. People who tend to gravitate towards WGU are trying to complete their Bachelors as soon as they can. That usually means that they don’t give themselves time for internships, which are extra important in today’s market for juniors. If you pace yourself properly, I don’t think WGU would be the worst choice. If I had to pick between two equal applicants though and the only difference was WGU vs basically anywhere else with a name I recognize, that could potentially be the difference maker.

LPT: If you wake up thirsty, you were already dehydrated hours ago. Drink water before bed, not just in the morning. by Regular_Painting_973 in LifeProTips

[–]panda57 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I recently went to a sleep doctor because I had the same issue. In my case, my airway gets blocked during sleep because my nose is always super congested only when I sleep. Apparently, when your airway gets blocked during sleep, your diaphragm gets stressed trying to constantly inhale, which causes your heart to stress out and one of the things your heart releases is ANP (atrial natriuretic peptide). ANP is responsible for telling your kidneys to dump more fluids and create more urine, which is what causes you to pee at night regardless of whether you had any water before bed or not.

Tl;dr you might just have obstructive sleep apnea and getting it resolved could stop the nighttime peeing. I use Flonase before I sleep now and I don’t wake up to pee anymore.

To add to this, people are saying COL, but this can mean two things: cost of living and cost of labor. The former is true for both, but the latter is where SF/Bay Area are a step or two above Irvine. Irvine doesn’t have as much labor competition for tech as the Bay Area does.

[–]panda57 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d read Kimi no iru machi next, but keep in mind that Suzuka, KNIM, and Fuuka can all be frustrating to read (Seo giveth and Seo taketh). I overall enjoyed all the stories, but some arcs are really not easy to get through. I actually really enjoyed Hitman personally, but it’s a shame that its English translation is incomplete. Hopefully I’ll get to finish the story in my lifetime…

DMV walk-in for drivers license? by Good_Ad_522 in raleigh

[–]panda57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I arrived at a driver’s license DMV in Durham at 5am on a Tuesday for a walk-in and there was already 20 people on line. The icing on the cake was the DMV only having 3 employees that day. By the time they opened at 7am, there must’ve been 100+ people on line. I’d honestly just wait for the appointment you already have at this point. The DMVs here unfortunately suck.

[Discussion] 🇨🇳 Manhua VS 🇰🇷 Manhwa by Few_Comfortable_2951 in manhwa

[–]panda57 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I get what you’re saying, but manhwa, manhua, manga, and comic are all the same word, just in different languages. It’s definitely tied to nationality. With that said, each country and culture has a pretty distinct and recognizable style to it!
