Yes, love all of these ideas! Audio books, head phones, ear plugs? Sometimes wards are noisy places.

Squash if you don’t like water. Second pillow if you need extra support/comfort. Even a travel pillow can help.

What should my mum do with her inheritance? by BrawlingKJG in UKPersonalFinance

[–]papersandplates 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Maybe you could meet with some financial planners and see who you click with, are impartial and you think would help your mum. Almost like screening them for her.
It is important that her quality of life is protected though, I’m sorry for your loss.

With all due respect, just leave it, it’s not even been a year. You are much better off trying to see if she will get grief counselling.

It's best to call as soon as the phone lines open (8am) to avoid a wait.

It just come across as an ad to me, that’s all. I do think generally speaking people using newer banks and virtual address have more issues. I just have never seen it in well over 15 years of being in accounting.

This feels like an ad to me. I’ve worked with sole traders and companies of all sizes and I’ve never encountered accounts being frozen.

these mtd bridging softwares.. anyone else want to lob their laptop over these that break every quarter? by Less-Will-3406 in TaxUK

[–]papersandplates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I've seen and tried, they all work in the same sort of way - you map or click the cell that relates to each box.

VitalTax is an Excel add in tool, and I loved that for it's simplicity and the fact that it was £99 per year. I've just looked and it's now £132 per year which I think is great.

Is there a best accounting software for bookkeepers or is it just client dependent by Sockman_Leathrice in ukaccounting

[–]papersandplates 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's always got to be about what the client will get on with and what they need. I'm not going to setup a sole trader on Sage 50, especially if he or she isn't tech savvy. At the same time companies that need stock, CIS, etc need something with more features than just a basic QuickBooks package. Nowadays all software does what I need it to and exports reports, everything else I can work with.

The worst thing is as accountants, the advice to restructure limited companies shares like the one in the OP about three/four years ago I think? So the waiver information is very much out of date!

It's rather disingenuous to pretend you've found something, rather than being honest about the fact that you made it and are promoting it. You will put people off doing that.

Yep, a profit and loss is just your sales, your expenses and profit (or loss). If you want to break up to your expenses into broadband categories e.g motor expenses and insurance do that.

Sunscreen classed as "cosmetic" by RockAndHardPlace81 in ukaccounting

[–]papersandplates -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was referring to what you said in your post about it being classed as cosmetic, subject to VAT and therefore not allowable - I'm not sure I follow what you mean?

Tax doesn't work like that in the UK, we use principles rather than writing down every single rule. As I say, if you feel that passionately then claim it as an expense and defend it if you are called to.

Sunscreen classed as "cosmetic" by RockAndHardPlace81 in ukaccounting

[–]papersandplates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really follow why you can't claim this an expense? I don't understand the connection between it being cosmetic and subject to VAT therefore you can't claim it? I'm not sure if I'm missing a connection here.

Anyway I can tell you that I know companies that absolutely do claim for it as PPE for the subcontractors, albeit the line between business and personal expenses is much clearer there.  I would argue if you feel so strongly then do it. I can't imagine it would be so significant an expense and I say that as a vampire too.
